History of The Gardeners Arms The building was owned by a William Crosse and later Charlotte Crosse from 1852 to 1860 then Joseph Lankester, wine merchant of Stowmarket owned it. In 1882 Alexander Clutterbuck, brewer of Stowmarket sold it to Edward Greene & Co. which in 1887 became Greene King & Co. The first mention of a beerhouse in the area is in 1855 when a William Haxell had a beerhouse in Upper Combs, not named but probably The Gardeners Arms. 1863 - 1875 The Gardeners Arms was run by John Robinson, a dealer. 1879 - 1891 the landlord was George Webber a cattle dealer he died in 1891 and his widow Margaret Webber was there until 1892 when Thomas Gosling, a bricklayer took over until 1911. from 1912 - 1938 George Battle was there, he had previously been at The Cricketers in Stonham. On his death the licence was transferred to his widow Mrs Nellie Battle, but by 1939 Roy Cotterell took over, he was the uncle of Pat Cobbold of The Live And Let Live. While Roy was serving in the forces during the war his wife Kathleen May Cotterell ran the pub. On his return Roy took over the licence and stayed on until 1950 when Dennis Buckle arrived. From this time a succession people took the pub usually for a few years only. 1956 mains water supply connected, water previously obtained from pond. 1966 - 1968 - Robert J.
