Halden

Robert Halden came from Paisley Scotland, arrived at Port Phillip on the Alan Kerr 30-11-1841 with Mary Craig. They settled at Glenlyon, near Daylesford, where Robert died about 1844.
Mary Halden nee Craig wed 24-9-1845 to Richard Babbington 1799-1853 and Sussanah and Richard were baptised at St James Church of England, where their parents were wed, in 1849, hence their consecutive registration numbers

I came upon your page while I was researching a branch of my wife's family, the Hewetts, she is descended from Mary Ann Hewett who married Edward Oakley. I do not know the history of Melbourne and was surpried to see them as pioneer familes. Is there a good website that you can recommend where I can get some background material?

Having looked at the Hewett details, you have two Hewett families mixed up. My Hewett details are as follows:

Richard and Sarah Hewett and their children arrived on the ship Saxon in June 1849. Richard was born in 1802 in Uffculne in Devon and Sarah in 1807 near Taunton in Somerset, according to her death certificate, but I have not been able to find her baptism entry. The Hewetts had lived in Devon back to 17th century. Richard and Sarah were married in Bath in 1828. Thir children were:

Augusta born Somerset 1829, Frances born Somerset 1831, Robert born Somerset 1836, Edith born Somerset 1841 and Mary Ann born Hampstead, London 1844.

Richard died in October 1851, this information from the marriage cert of Sarah who remarried to George Lloyd Allport in Collingwood in 1855. Sarah died in 1882, George Allport in 1883.

The details that you have of Mary Ann and Edward Oakley's children are correct, though I can add a few more facts.
Edward Lloyd born 1867, died unmarried and chilless in 1908,
Walter Hewett born 1869, married Nellie Davis in New Plymouth in 1898, she died in 1906. He abandoned his three young children by her and returned to Melbourne. He remarried to Emily Lewis in 1914 and died in 1927.
George Clive born 1871, died 1874,
Mary Augusta born 1873 married John Stranger in 1903 but died childless in 1936,
Lucy Blanche born 1877 never married and died childless in 1944
and finally Percy Allport Oakley born 1883, married Flora Lobb in 1913 and died in 1955 leaving a son Edward Percy and a daughter Lorna who married a Tribe.Percy was a leading Australian architect in the 1920's to 1950's and designed a number important buildings in and around Melbourne including the premiers house.
As there are so few desendents, I am keen to make contact with any of the Austrailan clan to learn more about our common ancestors.

Edward was a tailor from Wallsall. I have not been able to find how or when he arrived in Melbourne. He set up a tailoring business and was a factory owner when he died in 1898. Mary died in 1903.
