Hi Elizabeth Thank you for your reply. I'm assuming from your reply that you are not related to William Stodden and Martha Saunders.
Martha Saunders has been my biggest brickwall for over 5 years now. When I first came across your website saying that Martha's parents were Seth Saunders and Mary Polly, I was curious to know where you had found that information as I have had no luck what so ever finding Martha's parent's and thought I had missed something and that you may have found it. According to Martha Saunders and William Stodden's marriage certificate and Martha Stodden's death certificate (she died Ballarat, Vic 1913 Reg. No. 8042) her parent's names were William Saunders, occupation Carpenter, and Julia Anderson. Her age at marriage was 21 years old so her birth would have been about 1867.
From the Stodden information I have collected over the years both Richard Stodden and Ann Pett were born in Gwennap, Cornwall. Both can be found in the 1841 census. Richard here -
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kayhin/40137c.html - Book 7 Folio 44 Page 3 and Ann Pett and family are on the same page but at the bottom. I have not yet been able to check the 1851 census.
Richard Stodden was born about 1829 to Richard Charles Stodden and Elizabeth Painter (Widow). Richard and Elizabeth were married 7th July 1829 - http://members.tripod.com/gwennap-opc/marriages%201820.htm - Gwennap, Cornwall.
Ann Pett was born Dec 1828 to Charles Pett and Mary Morcomb (Widow, nee Stanton). Charles and Mary were married 25th August 1827 - http://members.tripod.com/gwennap-opc/marriages%201820.htm - Gwennap, Cornwall.
Richard Stodden and Ann Pett married in Gwennap, Cornwall in August 1853.
Richard arrived in Melbourne in Jan 1854 aboard the Merlin. Ann Stodden is, according the PROV online indexes, recorded as arriving on the ship Parsee, as an Assisted Immigrant, spelt as Anne, and also as an Unassisted Immigrant, spelt as Ann.
Thank you again for your reply. It looks like I will have to keep searching until I find the right Martha Saunders.
Regards
Faye
