This is a recent photograph of the Manor Farm referred to in the notes that you sent to me. It is to the right of picture of Corner House that I sent to you. The space between the properties is occupied by the cattle sheds (no longer used)

Dear Ancestor:

Your tombstone stands among the rest, neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out on polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care, it is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist, you died, and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you in flesh, in blood, in bone.

Corner House, Bower Chalke Wiltshire Our blood contracts and beats a pulse entirely not our own
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled one hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left who'd have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot, and come to visit you.

Notes for JAMES BLICK:

James Blick arrived in the Steam Ship " Larpent" on 28th June, 1849
 as an assisted immigrant.

The Larpent: Ship & Settlement.

In 1841 Rev. Dr. John Dunmore Lang visited Melborne to gather material
for his book Phillipsland published in 1847 as an enticement to
immigration.

After travelling through the Western District Dr. Lang proposed
the construction of steam or horse powered tramway to carry farm
produce to Geelong. On 3rd August 1849 he purchased one square mile
(640 acres) being section 20 of the Parish of Nalangil,
County of Polworth, part of the Irrewillipe Pastoral run licensed
to Andrew Murray in 1847. Section 20 was divided into blocks
and sold to English Protestants for one pound an acre.
The purchaser receiving free passage to the colony. Dr. Lang
paid 1,057 pounds to cover the cost of passage and provisions.

The Larpent sailed in March 1849. In the Bay of Biscay a fierce
storm struck. The only damage was a lost anchor.
Captain Gibson was obliged to return to England for another.

The second voyage began in April 1849. Water and vegetables
became short 50 days out and were rationed to the children and sick.
Scurvy followed and typhoid on the 70th day. Ten died and three were born.
On April 28th 1849, ninety-one days after leaving London,
the Larpent arrived at Point Henry, Geelong. Thirteen passengers
died while the ship was at anchor. On hearing of the sickness
on board Rev. Francis Tuckfield turned his large house into a
hospital and he and his wife Sarah nursed the patients' back to health.

Having little or no knowledge of farming few of the passengers took
up their land but sold after arriving at Geelong. Passengers
who settled on Section 20 were James Cascoyne Child and William Needham,
first husband of Margaret Walters (The Golden Age No. 96).
Others on record as taking up land in the district are John Matthews,
Thomas Walters, Thomas Bridson, William Frith, John Richardson,
McFarlane and John Burrows.

Doctor Langs tramway did not eventuate, so although the soil was
fertile it was virtually impossible to get the crops to market.
The gold rush in 1851 precipitated the demise of the settlement.
Fences and houses disappeared as the small landholders sold out.
The name of the district and its school are reminders of the Larpent.
The south West corner of Dr. Lang's 640 acres was cut through by
the Princess Highway. A large dairy property on the north side of
the highway, 10 km west of the Colac post office, still bears
evidence of the early settlement: stone footings, a meticulously
constructed 30 foot brick well, an ancient mulberry and Scotch pine,
fruit trees and ubiquitous belladonna's.

Of the ill-fated crew of 31 on the last voyage of the Larpent to
Formosa in September 1850, 20 were decapitated and eaten, their
heads being tossed into a grisly heap. Captain Gilson and seven
of the crew were murdered or taken captive. Three were rescued
after several years of slavery.

Margaret Carey-Needham-Walters.)

Additional Information: Son of Albert and Caroline Blick;
husband of Jeanette Brown (formerly Blick), of 58, Droop St.,
Footscray, Victoria, Australia. Native of Ballarat.

Cemetery: LONE PINE MEMORIALTurkey

Grave or Reference Panel Number: 27.

Location: The Lone Pine Memorial is at the east end of
Lone Pine Cemetery, which stands on the plateau at the
top of Victoria Gully, and is located on the road
from Gaba Tepe to Chunuk Bair.

Historical Information: The eight month campaign in Gallipoli
was fought by Commonwealth and French forces in an attempt
to force Turkey out of the war, to relieve the deadlock of
the Western Front in France and Belgium, and to open a
supply route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Black Sea.
The Allies landed on the peninsula on 25-26 April 1915;
the 29th Division at Cape Helles in the south and the Australian
and New Zealand Corps north of Gaba Tepe on the west coast,
an area soon known as Anzac. On 6 August, further landings
were made at Suvla, just north of Anzac, and the climax of
the campaign came in early August when simultaneous assaults
were launched on all three fronts. Lone Pine was a
strategically important plateau in the southern part
of Anzac which was briefly in the hands of Australian
forces following the landings on 25 April. It became a
Turkish strong point from May to July, when it was known
by them as 'Kanli Sirt' (Bloody Ridge). The Australians
pushed mines towards the plateau from the end of May to
the beginning of August and on the afternoon of 6 August,
after mine explosions and bombardment from land and sea,
the position was stormed by the 1st Australian Brigade.
By 10 August, the Turkish counter-attacks had failed and
the position was consolidated. It was held by the
1st Australian Division until 12 September, and then by the 2nd,
until the evacuation of the peninsula in December.
The LONE PINE MEMORIAL stands on the site of the fiercest
fighting at Lone Pine and overlooks the whole front line
of May 1915. It commemorates more than 4,900 Australian and
New Zealand servicemen who died in the Anzac area - the
New Zealanders prior to the fighting in August 1915 -
whose graves are not known. Others named on the memorial
died at sea and were buried in Gallipoli waters.
The memorial stands in LONE PINE CEMETERY. The original small battle
cemetery was enlarged after the Armistice when scattered graves
were brought in from the neighbourhood, and from Brown's Dip North
and South Cemeteries, which were behind the Australian trenches
of April-August 1915. There are now 1,167 Commonwealth servicemen
of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery.
504 of the burials are unidentified. Special memorials commemorate
183 soldiers (all but one of them Australian, most of whom died
in August), who were known or believed to have been buried in
Lone Pine Cemetery, or in the cemeteries at Brown's Dip.
