Incontinence is a condition that occurs when your cat can not control his/her urination. This could mean either a slight dribble after urinating in the litterbox or dribbling throughout the day. Your cat may not even know he/she is urinating when it happens. This is different from excessive urination, marking or spraying.
Incontinence can occur for a variety of reasons one of which is age. As a cat gets older the sphincter muscles around the urethra weaken and thus dribbling can occur. Incontinence can also occur as a result of injury, stress, disease or infection to the urinary tract, stones, spinal cord injury, brain injury or other neurological problems.
If you suspect incontinence in your pet take him/her to the vet immediately. Your vet will first look for any underlying diseases that might be causing incontinence as well as ruling out excessive urination or a urinary tract infection.
Symptoms to look for: Dripping or dribbling urine
Treatment:
Depending on the cause of the incontinence your vet may prescribe a variety of treatments ranging from surgery to repair the urethra, to removing a stone or blockage, to medication to take care of inflammation or infection of the urethra, to treatment for a neurological injury.
Precautionary measures:
Feed your cat a high-quality, vet-approved diet. Keep your cat in a stress-free environment especially around the litterbox. And finally, if your cat has any sort of bladder infection or urinary tract problem take him/her to the vet immediately. A simple URI can lead to incontinence if not treated appropriately or in a timely fashion
