NETHERLANDS 6 - 1 YUGOSLAVIA
Kluivert 24, 38, 54        Milosevic 90
Govedarica og 51
Overmars 78, 90

The quarter-finals kicked into life with Patrick Kluivert seemingly setting a new goalscoring record for one Euro Finals game with four goals inside the first hour, but as was shown later, 'only' netting a hat-trick, whereupon Frank Rijkaard promptly took him off to save the Yugoslavs further embarrassment...some hope...Overmars scored two more in the last ten minutes, with Milosevic scoring a startlingly similar and beautifully pointless goal in the dying seconds of the game...but at least the Dutch took half an hour off in the middle, eh.....?  (!)

SPAIN 1 - 2 FRANCE
Mendieta pen 38 Zidane 33
                        Djorkaeff 44

The quarter-finals continued to get better with this much-anticipated game, which pitted the World Champs against the perennial under-achievers of the beautiful game...and nothing much was to change on that score......Zidane put the French in front with a beautifully flighted free-kick only for everybody's favourite ref to give a quite ridiculous penalty to Spain five minutes later....Mendieta wasn't arguing though, as he rolled the spot-kick calmly to Barthez's left....just before half-time good work by Patrick Vieira gave Youri Djorkaeff the chance to put France in front, and that he did, firing home just inside the near post just before half-time....and that, pretty much, was that....oh, apart from Raul missing another penalty that never was in the last minute....!  Ha ha ha ha ha!
