            The World Cup

Once there was a game that all the world loved to play
Its eyes were trained on France to see the best players of the day.
They came from far and wide (four different continents were there)
And so on June the tenth in 'Gay Paree' began the fare...

It started well enough, the first few games went without hitch
And people were concerned with just the skill shown on the pitch.
Alas, alack, it couldn't last, the organisers said
'We need the refs to show more cards, particularly red!'

So that was that; out came the cards, the tournament went mad.
The hooligans came out as well, it all turned pretty sad.
The Scots obeyed tradition, just one round and back they came,
Unfortunately the English only lasted one more game.

But on and on it went, and as the tournament progressed
And the remaining nations fought to see which one of them was best
A funny thing transpired ('cos following the English loss)
It turned out it didn't matter because no-one.....really cared!*
