Hello, and thanks for stopping by my spot on the Internet about Alzheimer's Disease!
This site is dedicated to my mother Isobel Rhodes who has suffered from Alzheimer's Disease since the mid-1990's. In the summer of 1998 she took a turn for the worse when she had a stroke which rendered her left side useless and has been confined to a wheelchair in an extended care residence for the past few years.
I have done some volunteer work for the local Alzheimer's Society, hoping to come full circle and put a little bit back into an organization that has offered so much assistance to my family, and especially my father who had to take on the caregiver role while Mother still lived at home.
A few months after Mother had the stroke I was laid off from my job and the perfect timing and opportunity came up for me to leave a legacy to my mother. My mother was a wonderful cook and loved throwing parties and entertaining. She compiled a cookbook over fifty years, some recipes were given to her and others she created herself. She typed them up and kept them in a three ring binder, neatly organized into categories. I took her recipes and created a cookbook that is interspersed with stories about Mother and how Alzheimer's Disease took over her life. I also added some advice and tips and a few photos. The end result a beautiful cookbook. My mother's recipes will live on instead of growing dusty on a kitchen shelf in her old binder.
My web page is mostly dedicated to the cookbook, titled Recipes My Mother Forgot, and you will read excerpts from it and see the list of recipes on other pages on this site. If you are interested in a copy, I donate a portion of the proceeds to an Alzheimer's organization.
I also write a free newsletter delivered by email called AlzTalk. I publish it every six to eight weeks (or longer!), and it basically reads like a letter from me to you. I talk about what is happening in my life and with my mother. I profile a different web page, put in some quick tidbits of Alzheimer's news, and take a paragraph to offer advice. It's not too lengthy, it isn't published regularly, and it's a friendly, non-intimidating way to keep in touch with another Alzheimer's caregiver. Best of all it's free! There is no advertising on AlzTalk (other than what Yahoo throws in at the top), but if any subscriber wants a free mention of their website, that can be arranged. Your email address is not shared with anyone else, and sign up is through Yahoo Groups (formerly eGroups). I have links all over my web page, so feel free to click on one and sign up for AlzTalk. A warning though. I publish so infrequently that you might even forget you have signed up! I find that a good thing. I'm sure I'm not the only one with a busy life and I find I end up deleting unread too many newsletters that arrive in my mailbox on a regular basis. Check out the archives of AlzTalk.
The rest of this site has photos of my mother, some media publicity surrounding Recipes My Mother Forgot, a page of links to other Alzheimer's sites (plus some of my other web pages), and a page for items of interest that may or may not be Alzheimer's related.
Have a look around and enjoy! Feel free to bookmark my web site and come back for another visit. And don't forget to sign up for my free newsletter, AlzTalk.
Thanks for stopping by!
