Thursday 06/12/08 12:50 PM 2008 FRUMPS!!!!

Bet you thought I'd never update this again! Hell no! I was just waiting for the perfect moment. And this is it. I bet you can feel it too. The perfect moment for the HTML comfort food that is the MCG.

Today I'm going to jump in an aquatic car and take a sunny Sunday joyride in the Mariana Trench. Or maybe the Mid-Atlantic Ridge would be more fitting. I don't know. I've only ever driven flying cars. You?

But hey, free president.

2006 BLARNEY STONE!!!!

Hey, last Wednesday I approved the proofs for
Applewine. So it's all on its way to becoming a real boy now. I should have them in my hands on Oct. 26. I can't friggin wait. I've been working on my press kit lately, honing the bio and whatnot. Alyssa has been helping me, but she wants me to tone down the me-ness of the writing, but eff that because I want my bio to grab yawl. She helped a lot though with the design and just basic wording and stuffs.

Last week I housedogsat for the Pounders in Hood River. I wrote and recorded 8 songs. The best ones are probably "Nuke Song" (written after watching too much CNN) and "Love Working Overtime." The others are pretty good too, but they need work. Well, they all need work. I'll probably start doing actual demos here soon.

I just ate a bunch of carrots.

But hey, free weird tunnel.

2006 SKYLARKING!!!!

Well I kind of forgot about updating this site since I finished
Applewine. But really I haven't finished it; I'm still fixing tiny things with the mix. The art is all done though, and plugged into the Discmakers templates and ready to go. I also have the money. Now I just need to put the finishing touches on the master CD, fill out forms, get my otters in a row and send the shit off. Hopefully next week, before I go to Hood River to [house/dog]sit fer Nick's tribe. I'm gonna record Lap Inferno Part II there. Of course, I need to write songs first. I'll do that at the same time. Should be as interesting as an icicle in your eye.

Last Friday Alyssa and I went to the zoo. My favorite was the cougar. Such a cat, but so deadly. I learned that cougars, mountain lions, pumas and panthers are all THE SAME THING. THEY ARE ALL NAMES FOR THE SAME CAT. I did not know that. But the cougar at the zoo ruled--it was a prowling master. I also liked the oliphants and the otters. Oh and the sea lions. Big blubbery fools. It was a fun afternoon; I'd been meaning to go to the zoo for a while, but was always afraid of the money and didn't wanna go on cheap Tuesdays because of the crowds. I wanna go again soon. Oh, we also ate an elephant ear. It really hit the spot. Oh, AND HOW COULD I FORGET BOUT THE GRIZZLY BEAR. Alyssa took my picture in front of it. That ruled. I love how all my favorite animals are indigenous to this general area. I'm boring.

Alyssa and I went to Anna Bannanas (yes, with three N's), which is another place I live close to but haven't been to once since I've lived here. I went there once or twice with Joe like five years ago and liked it, and Alyssa heard it was super and wanted to go, but we never did. Even though I only live like five blocks from it. And they're open late. We had no excuse. But shit, that place rules. It's not trendy and hipster-oriented like Coffee Time up the road, the coffee is dank, it's a fuggin house, and they have old Rolling Stone mags. Reason number Greg why NW Portland rules. But NE has some rad coffee places too. And SE. Okay, there's good coffee everywhere. Fuck ewe.

But hey, free sky-fi.

2006 OCEAN MAN!!!!

Alright, the track listing for
Applewine is locked down hella tight. Check it:

1. plains of mostly still life
2. coldplay got eaten by piranhas
3. fearful symmetry
4. i can kill my enemies with my mind
5. engulf the manatee
6. under your spell
7. hills of the mind
8. land of dainty wonder
9. i hope you're never crushed by something heavy
10. i wasn't meant to be
11. the bevel collector
12. bugs
13. update your blog
14. corn dog shaped like california
15. all i have to do is hurt you
16. elysium

I'm still tweaking things ever so slightly. It still say it's all basically done though. I rerecorded a guitar part on "Bugs" yesterday just because I decided I wanted to use my ES-335 (or Dot in Epiphonese) instead of my Tele and it sounds EXACTLY THE SAME AS IT DID BEFORE. But I can hear the difference, I swear.

The title for the next album is
Missing Briefcase.

I've been getting real into Ween lately. I never really got into them before because for some reason I thought they were just a weird artsy uncatchy joke band. This is not true. Ween is as much a joke band as TMBG is. Which is to say, they're not. And like TMBG, they are really good songwriters; melodic and profound and clever when they wanna be and smartassy and obtuse when they wanna be. Ween is basically a smartassier version of TMBG. More stoner-friendly and less geeky, but probably just as good. I don't know why I didn't just love them before. The only album I'd really heard was
Quebec, as well as a few older songs here and there, and while I liked all of it enough, I could never really get into it. Well, now that I have The Mollusk, I'm liking Quebec a lot more. I feel like I get them now. I'm so glad I have a new band to obssess over (sorry, Alyssa). I love it when you first get into a band and there are a whole bunch of albums of theirs out there ripe for the grasping. I'm kinda pissed now that I didn't get to see them FOR FREE in July. But I couldn't help it. My car was sucking. Arrggh. I downloaded some live videos of them live from last year and they're really rad. Eff.

But hey, free fake Tripod.

2006 FOGGY EYES!!!!

I've been working on
Applewine all this week. Like, fixing such minute things. I've gone insane I think. But I think--THINK--that the mix is complete. The album is done. The art should be done in a couple weeks, before Madeline starts schoolin', and then it will be time to send it off to the plant. I'm looking forward to getting experience on pressing my own CDs. I like that I'm doing everything on my own--recording, mixing, mastering, pressing, promo, copyrighting, publishing, etc. I feel I have no need for a label at all. All one needs is money basically. And not being lazy. I kinda think it's fun. I like doing business through mail.

I saw the Shaky Hands last night. They ruled as usual. I hope they sign to Holocene. That would be crazy. I wouldn't see them much next year, but it would be good for them and our whole little group of music dudes. Nathan went nuts on aux perc. Everyone cheered when he broke the maraca. The slide guitar is a good addition too. Super mossy, that band.

Did I mention that Tegan and Sara is recording their next album in PORTLAND starting this January?? That rules! Chris Walla is producing. You may know him as the producer of The Thermals. Oh, and he's in some band called Death Cab For Crappy Music and produces all their stuff too. I actually think the production on Death Cab's latest album is really good. Except you can't hear the guitar on "I Will Follow You Through The Dark." What's up with that. For some reason people always mix the guitar way too low on acoustic songs. All you hear is the vocals pretty much. When you listen to the two acoustic songs on
Applewine, you will be able to hear every goddamn guitar note. I'm taking it back, man. Anyway, Alyssa and I are going to be hanging around the hip parts of town a lot this winter. Alyssa has this life goal of having coffee with them.

But hey, free Ted Gowan.

2006 SARA!!!!

Well it's been a busy week. I was in Hood River most of last week working at the port in the booth. Of course, there was no wind the last two days so I had to paint and kill time. Really, they didn't even need me but I made some money and that's what matters. Money that will go toward making ACTUAL CDs of
Applewine. Yes, I changed my mind yet again. Alyssa will let me borrow the rest of the money I need, so it's going to happen, and soon. Within the next month or two. I can't wait. It will only be 300 CDs, but I don't think I've made even 30 copies of most of my albums anyway. I'm really happy with Applewine too. Best album yet. It's not perfect, but OH WELL. It shouldn't be anyway.

Yesterday I helped Alyssa move into her new dorm. It's a sweet pad. Lots of good seating. I kept hitting my head on the ceiling when I was on her top bunk though. Oopth. TextTwist is no longer available to us either. Eff.

Now that I don't have any obligations for the foreseeable future, I can concentrate on finishing
Applewine and getting a jorb, and getting some gigs to promote the album. I would lurve to do a tour next year.

Clam cream.

But hey, free hillz.
