Oh, the Things I Have Learned this Semester
College years are the years where young adults grow and learn a lot about themselves and all the opportunities that are offered in this world.  College was a real big eye opener for me. I learned qualities that I am capable of doing that I didn't even know I could do. This semester I learned that being on time is an  important key. Knowing how I learn best, and using  Victim language towards myself, and being on time are  the characteristics that kept me on point this semester.
Being on time is a very important characteristic for being in college. I can miss so much information in just as little as five minutes. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way. I know I am not a morning person, but I had to work around that and get up 20 minutes earlier and drive from Williamsburg to Hampton. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I had English 109 at 9:00 am. I was late for most of the classes, but in those times when I was late, I missed a lot of time to work on class work. As a result  I had to do it at home. I really learned my lesson in my math class; I had that class everyday from 10:00-10:50. I would be no later than ten minutes and I would miss a huge part of the lesson because it was only a 50 minute class period. So I also had to stay after and get help on the material that I missed. Being on time is a very important key in college.
This semester I also learned how I learn best. That is a very useful and helpful tool to know. It's not only helpful in academics but it is also helpful in life in general. I learn best kinesthetically and visually. Kinesthetically is when a person learns best by moving and touching and feeling things. Visually is when students learn by looking at graphs and demonstrations or simply being color coded so they can remember the material. Not all teachers will teach the way individuals learn best, so students should be aware of their learning style in order to process information and putting it in the way they can retain the material.
In English 109 we learned about how people use Victim and Creator language. Victim language is when people blame others for their wrong, complain, use the phrase, "I can't," make up a lot of excuses, and as a result they don't seem to achieve their goals. Creators are learners who seek out solutions, take action and go for their goals, try new experiences, and they achieve their goals. I was in the category of being a Victim in the beginning of the semester. I would always put myself down before even letting my self try new experiences. I would use the word, "can't" instead of saying the phrase, "I can!"  Success starts with a person's attitude. People should always think highly about themselves because they are the only one that truly can. When a person thinks highly of themselves then everyone will.  If they think negative about themselves, then that is what people will see. Success begins with one's attitude, and one should have the attitude of a creator.
I am only in my freshman year of college and I feel like I gained so much knowledge not just in academics, but knowledge of myself.Just knowing my learning style, being on time, and the use of Victim language will help me keep a positive path in life .I will use these tools with all of my semesters coming up and when I am done with college and in the working industry. I know I will be successful because of what I have learned this spring semester of 2007.
