Chenrezig, Spyan-ras-gzigz (Tibetan) / Avalokiteshvara (Sanskrit) / Kuan Yin, Quan Yin, Guanshiyin (Chinese) / Quan'Am (Vietnam) / Kannon, Kanzeon (Japanese) / Kanin (Bali) i.e. the Bodhisattva of Compasion: Om Mani Padme Hum (Sanskrit -- pronounced "Ohm Mahnee Pahdmay Hum" or Om Mani Peme Hung (Tibetan -- pronounced "Ohm Mahnee Pehmeh Hung") is a mantra. Mantras are a collection of mystical syllables which are to be chanted, often during meditation. Om Mani Padme Hum is the mantra of Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Tibetans chant this mantra to invoke Chenrezig. There is no direct translation of "Om Mani Padme Hum," but some attempts include: "Praise to the Bodhisattva of Compassion," "Hail the jewel in the lotus," and "Om and salutations to the Jewel of the mind that has reached the lotus of the heart." It is said that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in this mantra. It has also been said that the six syllables purify the six realms of rebirth: Om ------------------- Pride ------------------ Gods Ma ----------------- Jealousy ------------- Asuras/Titans Ni --------------- Passion / Desire ---------- Humans Pad ----------- Stupidity / Prejudice -------- Animals Me --------- Possessiveness / Poverty -- Hungry Ghosts Hung ---------------- Hatred ------------------- Hell Vajrayana Buddhists believe Chenrezig is currently embodied as the Dalai Lama. It is also beneficial, but not necessary, to visualize Chenrezig while you recite this mantra. Alternatively, you may visualize the Dalai Lama. You may visualize Chenrezig or the Dalai Lama inside or outside your own body. Either way, visualize their heart being encircled by the mantra, and radiating light in all ten directions (all directions). Here are some pictures of Chenrezig:: |

Om Mani Padme Hum is a mantra that you can say anytime, anywhere, preferably out loud. It is also something you can say for all the little creatures we inadvertently kill and harm throughout the day. |
