Angel Wars
Miwa Ueda, Kodansya, 4
I happen to be a huge fan of Miwa Ueda, and am trying to collect most of her series. So one day I decided to pick this one up, and found it to be very fun. Although the title might lead you to think it's a fantasy, it's really not. Its about a girl named Maria who was raised in a Catholic orphanage, and has wanted to be a nun since her childhood. She has a Daddy Long Legs, and one day receives a letter telling her about him. She decides to follow her leads to find him, and enters . . . an all-boys academy! She starts boarding with a student from her school, Seiya. Maria starts to try to unravel the truth about herself, her parents, and her Daddy Long Legs, and she has to decide what she really wants to be, too.
I thought it was really touching: Maria's experiences and what she finds out are described realistically, and the situations are often very funny, in sometimes tragically human ways. The ending is actually quite happy, although I really would have prefered a different one (I kind of like sad endings). Even so, I find it's very interesting because it has somewhat different choices of situations -- it does play on some of the more typical shoujo themes, but even so, it's quite good.
As usual for Ueda, the artwork is quite attractive. She has a tendency to draw very pretty drawings, with hip outfits. I really do like it.
