Atlanta can be a pretty outdoorsy place. Remember to pick up your weekly Creative Loafing and Southern Voice to look up any events that will be going on. |
Books Outwrite Bookstore and Coffee House - Atlanta's only gay bookstore, it has a nice selection of gay/lesbian books, magazines and novelty idems. It's also a nice place to hangout, right in the heart of gay midtown. Regularly hosts different authors. Outwrite, 991 Piedmont Ave., Atlanta, 404-607-0082. Charis Books and More - Atlanta's only feminist bookstore, this is a little 5 points hangout for queer feminists. They regularly host women authors, different groups, workshops and readings. Charis, 1189 Euclid Ave., Atlanta, 404-524-0304. |
Coffee - Like any other big city, you will probably find a disproportionate number of lesbians at coffeeshops all over Atlanta. This is especially true in the east suburbs. I don't think there's one specific place, so honorable mentions will go to Java Monkey, on Church Street in Decatur, and Joe's in the Village in East Atlanta. Java Monkey has a notable lesbian and Agnes Scott girl presence, and probably has the best coffee in town. They also have shows, varying from open mic poetry to bluegrass night. Religion Christ Covenant MCC - A gay/mostly lesbian open church in Decatur. 109 Hibernia Ave., Decatur, 404-373-6804. Congregation Bet Haverim - A reconstructionist synagogue for Jewish gays and lesbians in Atlanta. View site for details. |
Restaurants Watershed - Decatur restaurant owned by Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls, popular among women. Casual place. Watershed, 406 West Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, 404-378-4900. Cameli's - Totally vegan place next to Mary's in East Atlanta. Very cool, some very tasty dishes. Some nights they do different things such as poetry readings. Cameli's, 1263 Glenwood Ave., East Atlanta, 404-622-9926. Eddie's Attic - Has a restaurant and bar area that's popular with women. Eddie's Attic, 515-B North McDonough St., Decatur, 404-377-4976. Veg listings Atlanta I don't have much in this area yet. Any place in downtown Decatur is going to be very lesbian friendly. Same with East Atlanta. Cowtippers and Nikiemoto's in midtown serve a pretty much gay clientele. Outdoors Piedmont Park and Candler Park are the area parks where you're most likely to meet a lesbian. Atlanta Beat and Atlanta Heat - The women's soccer and rugby team. Both draw a pretty much all lesbian crowd. The Atlanta Beat's league may fold soon, though. Look at organizations for women's outdoor groups. That's it for now, more to be done later. Radio This way out - Great nationally syndicated g/l/b/t radio show. WREK 91.1 FM. Friday afternoon 12:30 to 1 pm. Alternative Talk - For Atlanta's African-American g/l/b/t community. 404-523-8989. WRFG 89.3 FM. Fridays at 5pm. Lamda Radio - l/g/b/t program. 404-523-8989. WRFG 89.3 FM. Tuesdays at 6pm. The Bert Show - not a gay program, but is a very popular Atlanta morning show, especially with gays because of lesbian cohost Melissa Carter. WWWQ 100 Weekdays 5:30 to 10am. Publications Southern Voice - It's the Atlanta area's gay weekly newspaper. You can pick them up for free at various locations all around town. Creative Loafing - Atlanta's best newspaper. It's also distributed weekly and freely at tons of locations all around town. It's progressive and gay friendly. Eleanor's Eyes - Small lesbian publication that circulates (monthly?) for the Atlanta area. I'm not sure where you can pick one up, but I think it's free. Swirl Magazine Atlanta - magazine for lesbians of color. Atlanta Gay Pages - yellow pages for gay Atlanta community. |
