SCENE: OUTSIDE CABIN
12
Amber looks at the picture with the distorted faces in her hand. She looks at the cabin, takes a deep breath and walks inside.
The sun lights up the leaves on the nearby tree, turning them flame-red.
Amber sits on the couch inside the cabin, holding the tape in her hands. She looks at it as the light from the leaves filters in through the window and turns the couch blood red.
As the clock on the VCR turns to
There are a few static-y blurts on the screen. The screen goes all static for a few seconds then goes to black. Amber sighs. Suddenly a picture of a crude white ring flickers onto the screen. It remains there for a few seconds, then goes to static.
Soon the static disappears and is replaced with the image of flowing, bloody water. A single chair in a white room. The reflection in a mirror on the right side of the screen of a dark-skinned man combing his hair. The same mirror on the left side with the dark figure of a boy in it. Same mirror on the right side again, with the dark-skinned man looking left.
A nail with blood dripping off the tip. The upper left corner of a house from the outside. The edge of a cliff with a tree being whipped around by the wind, with a fly that looks it was crawling around on the camera lens. A close up of a piece of string being pulled out of a mouth. A circle of light slowly closing up. A flaming tree.
A finger being skewered on a nail, accompanied by a high-pitched electronic whine. Amber grimaces. A screen full of crawling maggots, the colors of which are soon inverted.
A table with a single chair and a glass of water. The chair is slowly pushed back and a large, many-legged bug crawls out from under the table. An animal limping out of view. A large frightened-looking eye. The circle of light being closed up again. A box full of twitching fingers. The flaming tree again.
More static, then the same man in front of the mirror turning to face the camera. The house again. The chair from the second scene spinning upside-down in midair. A long ladder leaning up against a wall. What looks like a horse laying on the beach, the waves crashing against it. A man jumping off the same cliff from above. The ladder falling. The circle of light closing up again, then the ring of light flashes quickly before we see the ladder hitting the ground. This.
Static.
Amber stares in shock and horror. The pupils of her eyes shrink. She manages to turn the tape off. There is a brief, eerie silence.
The phone rings.
She gets up and answers it, breathing shakily.
BOY
[whispers on phone]
Seven days.
Amber’s eyes widen. She
slams the phone down and runs outside.
