INT. JESS'S HOUSE
Tim walks down the hall to Jess's room, hesitates, and knocks on the door.
TIM
Jess?
Inside, Jess jumps a bit, sets her drink down, and hides her copy of Guitar World under the covers
JESS
Yes?
TIM
You alright?
JESS
I’m fine.
TIM
You need anything?
JESS
… no.
TIM
… alright then.
She waits a few seconds, then picks up the drink and magazine again.
JESS
"I owe all my creativity to her. If I'd had an
easy childhood I'd
have nothing to write about."
That is the truth, honey.
END SCENE
INT. RED HOUSE
The three of them and Moog are sitting down to dinner (microwave dinners). The phone rings. They all freeze. It rings again.
MOOGLE
It's her. I know it's her.
MISTY
(walks over to get it)
Could be Sam.
SANGY
It's her. Could be Sam. But it's her.
MOOGLE
Don't answer it.
MISTY
Right.
(starts to walk
away. Walks back and answers it anyway)
Hello?
JESS (on phone)
Caught you.
CUT TO Jess, she paces her living room angrily
JESS
Now, why do you think you can get away
with this? You think I don't know what you're
up to?
CUT TO Misty, who panics
MISTY
Up to? What's that supposed to mean?
Sangy starts to get up. CUT TO Jess. She drops another picture of Moog into the trash
JESS
You don't fool me for a second.
CUT TO Misty
MISTY
Uh – well –
Sangy takes the phone from her
SANGY
We're not up to a goddamn thing, and if we
were it would be none of your business. So don't
go pokin' around or you'll spoil everything.
CUT TO Jess
JESS
I just don't want a big fuss, that's all I ask. And I
don't want candles on my cake. It'll look like the burning
of Atlanta.
SANGY
Pal, when we want your advice, we'll ask for it, got
it? Big kiss. Mwah.
(hangs up)
She thinks this is about her birthday. Can you believe
it?
Sabrina laughs. They all sit back down
MOOGLE
It's coming up soon too. Real soon.
SABRINA
Couple of days. No numbers, everybody.
MOOGLE
That's one thing that Mom always did well. The
birthday thing. She'd come into our room in the
morning and we'd have a party, just with us.
FLASHBACK of little!Moog, sitting in Jess's lap, in the morning. little!Reb and Pro sit on the edge of the bed, and in front of them is a small cake on a tray along with three glasses of milk
MOOGLE (V.O.)
Then when Dad got home, we'd do it again.
Moog blows out the candles on the cake
MOOGLE (V.O.)
He could never know about that morning cake, so she
always got two. It was our secret.
Flashback Jess hugs Moog and kisses his forehead. End flashback, FADE INTO Moog's face. He shakes his head, bites his lip. Then he takes a deep breath and gets up
MOOGLE
I'm gonna call Georgia.
SANGY
Go ahead. We'll leave you alone.
SABRINA
But we'll be listening from the kitchen, so talk loud.
They get up and start clearing the table. Moog grabs the phone and lays down on the couch, dialing Georgia's number.
CUT TO the apartment. Georgia's sitting on their bed, watching TV. The phone rings, she picks it up.
GEORGIA
Hi.
CUT TO Moog
MOOGLE
How'd you know it was me?
GEORGIA (on
phone)
Who else?
CUT TO Georgia
GEORGIA
How ya feeling?
MOOGLE (on
phone)
A little disoriented.
GEORGIA
Oh, well, horse tranquilizers will do that for you.
CUT TO Moog
MOOGLE
I can't believe you let them do this.
GEORGIA (on
phone)
They didn't ask my permission.
CUT TO Georgia
GEORGIA
They called me on their way to the airport, they
informed me of their plan. I saw you off.
CUT TO Moog; he blinks
MOOGLE
From where?
GEORGIA (on
phone)
Ahhh, I met you at the airport, helped them get you on
the plane. They're really organized –
CUT TO Georgia
GEORGIA
They even had a note from your doctor. By the way, your pills
are in your bag.
CUT TO Moog. He sits up and shouts in the direction of the others
MOOGLE
I have a bag?!
SABRINA
Yeah, in the
closet.
(smiles politely)
Tell Georgia we say hello!
MOOGLE
(lays back down)
Did you hear that?
GEORGIA (on
phone)
Yeah. I'll tell you one thing, seeing them again after all this time
explains a lot about you.
MOOGLE
Such as?
CUT TO Georgia, who's grinning
GEORGIA
Let me put it this way. You're a hell of a lot more normal than
you have any right to be.
CUT TO the kitchen. Sangy pours all the leftover drinks into one glass and takes a sip from it. She sets the empty glasses down next to the sink, where Misty is doing the dishes, then sets the full one down a few feet away while she looks through the cupboard. While her back is turned, Misty grabs the full glass and dumps it down the drain. Sangy turns around and frowns
SANGY
Why'd you do that?
MISTY
They'll explain it all to you at the asylum.
Sangy notices the lollipop stick dangling from Misty's mouth. She yanks it out and chucks it in the trash. Misty gets an 'oh this means war' look on her face and begins splashing water at Sangy
CUT TO Moog
MOOGLE
(whispers)
Listen, I'm gonna try and bust outta here tomorrow. I have
to get back for the show.
CUT TO Georgia
GEORGIA
Don't rush back on my account.
CUT TO Moog
MOOGLE
… I just said it was for the show.
Georgia
GEORGIA
I just meant maybe you ought to fix this thing with your
mother once and for all.
CUT TO Moog
MOOGLE
Why are you so worried about this?
CUT TO Georgia
GEORGIA
Because I'm afraid that one day, our kids might feel that way
about you.
CUT TO Moog. He blinks
MOOGLE
Ow.
GEORGIA (on
phone)
These women may be nuts, but I have a feeling they might know
something you don't.
MOOGLE
I don't think it's fair that you're bringing kids we don't even
have into this, Georgia. Okay, that was just a really low blow.
GEORGIA (on
phone)
Well, that's the way I feel.
CUT TO Georgia; she's got an amused look on her face
GEORGIA
Stay there. Deal with it.
CUT TO Moog. His mouth hangs open in an indignant, incredulous kind of way. He presses the off button and throws the phone down
MOOGLE
You deal with it.
CUT TO Georgia.
GEORGIA
… ow.
She hangs up and sets the phone down.
