2008 MFL Draft Previews - Part Three of Four

Time to Clean Up
(August 5) Okay, the last week saw more changes in the clubs drafting in the first round than ever before. So, it's time to clean up the mess that was left behind. Without giving away too much, there are some changes in Dr. K's predictions for picks in the opening frame of the draft.

RB Rashard Mendenhall will move up from #7 to #5, still taken by Missouri. QB Matt Ryan is no longer listed at #6 now that Miami has the pick. RB Jonathan Stewart falls from #5 to #7 with the Peregrines taking him instead of Pittsburgh. RB Kevin Smith will go to Arkdale at #9. RB Felix Jones moves up one spot from #9 to #8 to New York. WR Roddy White will remain at #10, but it will a different club that will take him (more on that in a moment). And, finally, RB Matt Forte moves up from #8 to #6 and will go to the Mafia. Whew!

Let's also clear up the wide receiver situation in Pittsburgh. Dr. K mentioned earlier that the Spears would take WR Roddy White at #10. He still believes that White goes at ten, but that pick is now owned by the South Bend Scraps.

Another free agent, WR Donald Driver, will be an excellent selection for the Scraps in the second round. In the later rounds, QB JaMarcus Russell would be a bargain if he would fall that far. QB Trent Edwards may be heading to South Bend as well for insurance. Finally, TE Donald Lee and D/ST Seattle would be a couple of good additions to the Scraps.

Now that Pitt has the fourth pick, they will go after the enticing allure of WR Calvin Johnson can't be passed up. The only reason he's back in the draft is because of his ballooned salary last season. He is the real deal and will be for some time. If the Lions get production from QB John Kitna, Johnson is sure to be the recipient of much of that scoring. If the Spears can corral him for a low enough figure, he may be playing at Heinz Field for some time.

Finally, down the Toll Road, Chicago is desperate need of runningback help. Lucky for them, the best veteran available will be...well...available. RB Ryan Grant will bring his 8 rushing scores in only 10 games last season to Soldier Field. With the nod of the Packers coaching staff, Grant will get a full slate of games to showcase his talents. Many compare the runner to the likes of RB Larry Johnson, so if he can live up to those boastful words, he'll be worth every penny invested.

With everyone fighting over rookie runningbacks in the first round, WR Larry Fitzgerald will slip virtually unnoticed (not any more) into the second round. There's no denying his skills as physique as a receiver and he'll be an instant starter. A couple other guys that would help the Ravens perform much better in 2008 are TE Owen Daniels and rookie RB Ray Rice. Once the free agent market opens up, Chicago might be advised to grab another quality kicker, like rookie PK Taylor Mehlhaff.

2008 MFL Draft Previews - Part Two of Four

At Least There's Next Year...
(July 29) This week, Dr. K looks at three clubs that were close in some fashion, but couldn't get the job done. The New York Lynx posted an otherwise phenomenal 10-3-1 mark in '07, only to be upset by Arkdale in the Wild Card Game. The Missouri Peregrines shot themselves in the foot on the final week of the season to allow the same Aardvarks into the playoffs, which earned themselves a spot on the sofa. The Canton Cougars were playoff contenders into December before consecutive losses at the end made LaDainian Tomlinson a financial liability rather than a savior, leading to his ultimate dealing to Miami.

As the Lynx are analyzed, one can quickly discover that New York is a Super Bowl caliber team. They really don't need much, but they need more in order to leapfrog Pittsburgh in the division and the league. Even though wide receiver is their biggest need, the runningback sweepstakes will be too enticing for them to pass up, thus RB Matt Forte will head to Syracuse.

Forte's stock shot way up in the off-season as the Bears made some much-needed changes at the position that gave the rookie the instant starting role there. His blue-collar style makes him a perfect fit Upstate and, despite the crowded roster, gives New York a real future prospect in the backfield.

Speaking of wideout, WR Limas Sweed would make an excellent second-round selection for the Lynx. The lanky, yet speedy has huge hops and hands that Dion Mawhorter will come to appreciate down the road. Recent injuries have kept him limited, but he could see a half-dozen passes per game zinging his way as he matures into the system. The end of the draft is a formality for New York, but Mawhorter loves those rookies. Look to see guys like TE John Carlson and QB John David Booty sneak their way onto the roster.

Missouri definitely needs runningback help. Shaun Alexander is floating in the free agent market, so his last games as a Peregrines may have already been played and Willie Parker can run, but he can't score. Thus, rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall helps fill the void (or one of them). His 17 touchdowns at Illinois against a Big Ten schedule has made his very desirable to Drew Kuespert, especially since Maurice Morris was the Grines leading scorer on the ground last season with 3.

Missouri has several late-round picks and it would make sense for them to continue to look for backfield help. Rudi Johnson may get his last chance to prove his worth in the Brown and Gold. Rookie RB Chris Johnson may be a dual-threat as a back who chews up yardage and a kick returner. Others future prospects who may have targets on their backs are QB Brady Quinn, TE Dustin Keller and QB Joe Flacco.

With over $17 million in cap room with the trade of Tomlinson (QB Marc Bulger is now their highest paid player at $298,598), Tim Jones has tons of options. He could simply go for a straight draft and horde his cash until next year when LT would certainly be back on the draft board. With his track record, this seems unlikely. He would probably enjoy too much the possibility of disrupting someones plans with giddy delight. You can almost picture the wringing of his hands and his evil laugh now. But, who could he steal? With the new draft rules in place, it won't be a rookie, so it makes it hard to find that veteran that would be worth the jack to go after. With that said, K is going to go out on a limb and predict the Cougar draft from the perspective of a miser.

If he falls to #6, who could pass up QB Matt Ryan? He doesn't have much competition to gain the starting role in Hotlanta and if he isn't starting on Kickoff Weekend, Falcon fans won't put up too long with watching him ride the pine, so seeing him on the turf by October is a near guarantee. Sure he'll take his bumps with a lack of receiver help (after Roddy White), but getting him for only $3 million would make him a Cougar for years.

The real needs are addressed by Jones in the second round. Wide receiver is a position that Canton must fill and without a third- or fourth-round pick, they must draft then. Two guys that come to mind as good fits at Fawcett Stadium would be Jerry Porter and rookie James Hardy.

2008 MFL Draft Previews - Part One of Four

At Least There's Next Year...
(July 22) Besides the Super Bowl champions, most clubs watch the final 0:01 tick off of the league finale game clock with a long sigh, following by a shrug of the shoulders, and ending with a resigned "at least there's next year." For Miami, their next year is literally next year. If the conditions remain the way they are, here's the Mafia's draft next month:

Exactly. Nothing. With no draft picks and less than $600,000 in cap space, there isn't any wiggle room for the Mafia. Even a stolen pick would be out of the question without a trade before draft day, or a significant reduction in salary during Phase II. Don't expect L.T. to see the ax, though. Losing three starters in a trade to land the former league MVP was tough to swallow, but it would be mutiny in South Florida if the trade ended up being three starters traded for zero.

Even with that said, it would be hard to imagine GM Dave Wills sitting on his hands for 90 minutes watching 40 players being picked up and them going home with nothing. It would be equivalent to going to the senior prom stag and hanging out by the punch bowl all night (not that it happened to me or anything). So, with that, we expect Miami to make a move somewhere, most likely with WR Roy Williams. However, it's tough to gauge, so K will just have to wait like all of you.

The two-time defending champion Pittsburgh Spears have had plenty of bragging rights and they certainly look like possible favorites once again. On the road to a three-peat, the Spears will need to solve a couple position issues at runningback and wide receiver, most likely with their #5 and #10 picks overall. The toughest thing is that Pitt has only $2 million in cap space. K expects to see both RBs LenDale White and DeAngelo Williams get cut during Phase II to make more room for their incoming selections.

With their last pick in the first round, Pitt will take WR Roddy White, who became a household name in the Deep South after he was able to go for over 1,200 yards despite the horrendous rotation at quarterback he had to endure with the Falcons. With the addition of QB Matt Ryan in Hotlanta, White's numbers could explode as long as the rookie can flourish early.

The Spears would need an immediate impact player at tailback and who better than a young pair of iron legs belonging to RB Jonathan Stewart. Dude is speedy and strong. Other than McFadden, there may not be another back with the sheer power of Stewart.

The only other position that needs to be filled in Pittsburgh is defense/special teams. Somehow the Spears were able to win close games and pull away in others just because of their D/ST. Even more help will come in the form of the D/ST Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Our final look today takes place in Arkdale. The Aardvarks went from being the laughing stock of the league to laughing at their competition en route to the Super Bowl. They pulled a major coup by scoring QB Peyton Manning from the Spears earlier in the '07 season and almost beat them with their own franchise of years prior.

Now, they're poised to go back to the big game. Like most of their Western Division rivals who have struggled over the last two seasons, they need runningback help. So it's no suprise when they will select former University of Arkansas RB Felix Jones with the ninth pick overall. Even though his Razorback teammate will be taken higher, Jones will make a quick and lasting impression as well. He rushed for over 1,000 yards two seasons in a row as a backup to McFadden in the tough, tough SEC. So, while some say that the Cowboys can only be a one-back team, tell Felix that and he'll show you something different.

Just in case Jones isn't available or doesn't pan out, RB Fred Taylor, the quintessential journeyman MFL back, will be available for them in the second round. After that, QB Jason Campbell and rookie PK Brandon Coutu may be good fits on this edition of the Varks.

The 2008 Online 15

Another field day for rookie runningbacks
(July 15) Like last year, rookie runningbacks dominated The Online 15, making it quite a quandry for our league's general managers. But, at the head of the pack is former Domer RB Ryan Grant. Grant had a breakout year in '07, but did not see action in the MFL, making him a virtual rookie. He dominated our survey lists, however, earning an overall #9 ranking by Fox Sports and was only as low as #17. This puts him in elite company among the likes of Priest Holmes and Corey Dillon, who were some big Online names from the past.

The rookies are all sure to go fast, especially since the MFL instituted a new first-year pay scale; one that would be sure to make Gene Upshaw cringe. Even though he's listed as third, no one rivals RB Darren McFadden for the top pick in the MFL Draft, unless LT would be cut during Phase II. RBs Jonathan Stewart, Matt Forte, Kevin Smith, Felix Jones and Rashard Mendenhall won't be far behind. Because of several offseason developments, all six rookies could find significant playing time in the opening frame of their careers.

This would make it seem then that the second round will be loaded with quality talent for cheap. This could be the case with second-year pro WR Calvin Johnson and sudden stud WR Roddy White. One can't forget about QB Jay Cutler, who would instantly add depth to any roster.

Several "repeat performers" have graced their presence on the 2008 list. WR Larry Fitzgerald was also second on last year's Online 15, while Johnson and WR Donald Driver were a little higher than they are this time around. RB Fred Taylor will not go away, making his third appearance (2004 and 2006).

Among those that are a hard sell on the list are Taylor, RB Rudi Johnson and RB Justin Fargas. All three have more-than-competent competition at their position and injuries have been issues for them.

Finally, in looking at those that just missed the list, TEs Owen Daniels and Vernon Davis have the best chance to get a hefty amount of playing time in the MFL in 2008. There are still big question marks surrounding QBs Aaron Rodgers and JaMarcus Russell.

Modified Auction Precedure for Veterans Drafted in Rounds One and Two

1. The team who is up for drafting tells which veteran they would like to select. After making the player selection, the team must assign a dollar value that they would like to play for this veteran. A veteran is defined as an NFL player that has any NFL experience before the upcoming season.

2. The commissioner asks if there are any teams that would like to place a 'challenge' bid, or possess an equal interest in signing said player, thus, placing an increased bid upon the original bid. The increased bid has a fixed dollar value above the original bid depending upon the round. (See Figure 1 pertaining to 'Challenge Bids' below.)

3. If no team makes a 'challenge,' the player is declared 'signed' by the original bidding club. No further bidding takes place upon this player.

4. If one club makes a 'challenge,' the salary for the drafted player is increased by the amount required in Figure 1.

5. If more than one club makes a 'challenge,' the 'challenging' clubs start their increased bids at the amount required in Figure 1 and an auction ensues until only one clubs remains, and then that increased bid becomes the drafted player's new salary. Bidding during the auction must be done in $100,000 increments.

6. If the original drafting club declines to 're-challenge,' the player is declared 'signed' by the 'challenging' club. No further bidding takes place upon this player.

7. If the original drafting club decides to 're-challenge,' the salary for the drafted player is increased by the amount required in Figure 2 pertaining to 'Re-challenge Bids,' (see below) and the player is declared 'signed' by the original drafting club. No further bidding takes place upon this player.

8. After the player has been 'signed,' the next club in the draft order selects a player. If the players is a veteran, then the process begins again at Rule 1 above.

9. The Modified Auction Method is only used for veterans in Rounds One and Two only. All players, rookies or veterans, starting in Round Three have a set drafted value (see .xls or .pdf files above). The draft continues until all 40 selections have been made and signed, or until all teams have made only the selections they wish to make and forfeit their remaining picks.
