ERIC DOLPHY - "out to lunch!"
album of the day on a day in march

7/10 (GREAT/INNOVATIVE)
It is incredibly hard to revolutionize an entire genre of music. Eric Dolphy does not. It is sometime difficult to pay attention to every note on a jazz rekkerd. Eric Dolphy makes you. "Out To Lunch!" is, by all accounts, a riveting listen. It fits nicely within the parameters of free jazz, while exploring much of the genres range. How sad it is that Dolphy never made the album that could bust open our ears. What is left is this powerful, unorthodox jazz rekkerd, something Dolphy would never make again. It is almost tremendous to see this album as a wondrous swansong, but sad and depressing also. This is not smooth, but it is captivating. Dolphy blows his sax and flutes in a way that is like laughing or speaking, and there are not too many pattern easily followed. The vibraphones add a cool, atmospheric quality, which is sadly missed from too much music. Give us the vibes. We want Dolphy back. Until then, play this album, which is some sort of an accomplishment, just short of a landmark.
