Reissued 6/5/01 Cannonball Adderley; alto sax Nat Adderley; cornet Victor
Feldman; piano Sam Jones; bass Louis Hayes; drums Original session produced
by Orrin Keepnews Recording Engineer: Wally Heider Recorded live at The Lighthouse,
Hermosa Beach, CA on October 16, 1960 #1-6 originally issued as Riverside
9344 Mastered by Ron McMaster using 24-bit SBM Cannonball Adderley's third
album by his working group had the right ingredients to prove a major
breakthrough. The band was in great form; the material was new and strong and
the recording was recorded live before an appreciative audience like every
successful Adderley album before or since. Cannon's ingenious "Sack O'
Woe" packed a killer groove and became an instant jazz classic. Nat
Adderley, Victor Feldman and the incredible team of Sam Jones and Louis Hayes
complete this tight-knit group. Added to the original album is a version of
Tadd Dameron's "Our Delight". magicalex 2001 |

Adderley Quintet: Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); Nat Adderley
(cornet); Joe Zawinul (piano); Victor Gaskin (bass); Roy McCurdy (drums).
Recorded live at Sankei Hall, Tokyo, Japan on August 26, 1966. Japanese live
albums are almost always a delight. Respectful audiences and high-fidelity
recording equipment usually combine to make terrific-sounding records of
strong, intense performances. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's
fantastic live document IN JAPAN is no exception. Recorded in August of 1966,
in Tokyo, IN JAPAN features the alto saxophonist at the peak of his career.
Backed by his best band--cornet player Nat Adderley, electric pianist Joe
Zawinul, bassist Victor Gaskin, and drummer Roy McCurdy--Adderley runs
through a fairly standard set but does so in anything but a workmanlike way.
The extended take on "Mercy Mercy Mercy" is perhaps even fierier
than the one that would soon become a Top-20 pop hit. "Work Song"
and a swinging "Jive Samba" open and close the show in style, but
less familiar tunes like "The Sticks" and "Money in the
Pocket" are nearly as memorable. |

Recorded on January 5, 1958 and
remastered (24 bits) in 1998 by Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Notes: I do believe,
and in fact, it has been internationally acknowledged for quite a while that
for the self-styled record collector there is no other country as blessed as
Japan. Every American and European label is available here and you
continually hear of discoveries of an incredible variety of hard-to-find
records. As you all know from the phrase, the "elusive treasure
album," currently in vogue, the reissue and resale of rare records that
had once disappeared from the market and other prized recordings is fast
becoming a new boom. Approaching this phenomena from a different perspective,
there are also signs that the Japanese fans are taking a strong interest in
the jazz tradition. From the large numbers of people who are experts on the
contents of the catalogs and who are feverishly devoted to their record
collections, it is probably no exaggeration to say this this is a sure
expression of the very high value placed on this type of history and legacy.
Jazz coffee shops (jazz kissa) in Japan have Iong served to encourage an
appreciation of records, and have nurtured a great number of fans. Hard bop
has always been a favorite of these kind of establishments. As is well known,
hard bop appeared big on the New York scene in the 1950s. It developed and
flourished against the background of rising racial consciousness by the black
musician, and to this day continues to captivate crowds with the emotional
and forceful spirit of its sound. That almost all of the representative
albums recorded on Blue Note and Prestige have been re-released can be taken
as evidence of its continuing popularity. Not only a legacy of the past, this
music, with deep ties to the jazz tradition and a hard bop type of mood, is
listened to and enjoyed even today. There are many people who would name

New liner notes & rare photos Recorded while Miles Davis was still signed
to Prestige - and still owed the label several albums - Round About Midnight
finds Miles' first classic quintet hitting its stride, cutting an album that
set the standard for hard bop. This is classic music not just because it's so
exceptionally performed, capturing a terrific group at its peak, but because
it perfectly summarizes all the attributes of hard bop. This, for the casual
jazz fan, is what a jazz band should sound like, as Miles' cool trumpet
pushes and pulls against the hot saxophone of John Coltrane, with pianist Red
Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones providing
supple, sympathetic support. Needless to say, the more sophisticated listener
will find much to treasure within the interplay of this group, since it not
only captures a phenomenal group at its absolute peak, it demonstrates what
hard bop should be - searching, surprising, accessible, but never
predictable. This is what makes it worthwhile to jazzbos, but the great thing
about this record is that it isn't for snobs. This is vital music that
remains lively decades after its original release. While the trio of Workin',
Relaxin', and Steamin' impresses because of the three albums' sheer drive and
sustained energy, this is more concentrated, eloquent, and elegant, perhaps
the best way to hear Miles and Coltrane in a pure hard bop setting.
[Columbia/Legacy's 2001 reissue contains four bonus tracks from the sessions
- "Two Bass Hit," "Little Melonae," "Budo," and
"Sweet Sue, Just You" - which may not provide revelations, but
certainly nicely enhance an already classic album.] Davis's erstes Columbia
Album ist ein Klassiker. Sein quintet (with tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane,
pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones) war
schnell werden der pacesetters im Jazz und jede dieser sechs Leistungen sind
memorable. Zusätzlich zu endgültigem non-Monk hört die Wiedergabe
"'Round Midnight, " von einer das quintet, solche verschiedene
Songs wie und "Ah-Leu-Cha, " Cole Porter's "All of You, "
"Tadd's Delight" Ton "Dear Old Stockholm" zu bilden, als
ob alle sie für die Gruppe geschrieben wurden. Ihre Version von "Bye Bye
Blackbird" ist in der kühlen Weltklugheit das entscheidende. |

relaxed and less adventurous than his earlier groups with John Coltrane. The
trumpeter was at the peak of his powers in the early '60s and comfortable

Moon Germs (Remaster) |
CTI |
JOE FARRELL; HERBIE HANCOCK;
STANLEY CLARKE; JACK DEJOHNETTE |
Recorded at Van Gelder Studios,
November 21, 1972 1973 CTI/Columbia/CBS ZK 40929-2 Recorded in 1972 and
released in 1973 with Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, and Jack DeJohnette,
Joe Farrell's Moon Germs was a foray into the electric side of jazz. More progressive
than groove-oriented, three of the four compositions were written by Chick
Corea and certainly reflect that knotty, angular, almost mathematic penchant
of his for soaring arpeggios in the solos and contrapuntal bass lines that
circle DeJohnette's drumming. Nowhere is this truer than on the opener,
"Great George," where Farrell leads off with the hint of a melody
before careening into legato streams of thought along striated intervallic
paths. DeJohnette is like a machine gun, quadruple-timing the band as Clarke
moves against the grain in a series of fours and eights, and Hancock's
attempts to keep the entire thing anchored are almost insufficient. On the
title track there is more of a funk backdrop, but still, there are the knotty
runs and insane harmonic reaches Farrell attempts on his soprano that crack,
falter, and ultimately turn into something else even more satisfying that
what Mr. Math (Corea) wanted, though the sheer business of the track is
dizzying. "Bass Folk Song" is by Clarke, and is the only thing on
the record that actively engages melody rather than harmonic structures.
Farrell uses his flute and Hancock strides into the same kind of territory
his explored with Miles Davis, chopping up chordal phrases into single lines
and feeding them wholesale to the running pair frontmen in Clarke and
Farrell. DeJohnette uses a Latin backdrop to hang his drumming on and pursues
a circular and hypnotic groove on the cymbals and toms. It's a gorgeous piece
of music and utilizes an aspect of space within the melodic frame that the
rest of the firebrand tunes do not, though it's no ballad. This is sci-fi
Farrell at his most intense. Joe Farrell -soprano saxophone, flute Herbie
Hancock -piano Stanley Clarke -bass Jack DeJohnette -drums |

saxophonists smoke on a selection of standards adn contemporary workouts,
highlighted by "Secret Love," "The End of a Love Affair"
and "Blues Up and Down." Although it's primarily for Gordon
devotees, those fans will find it a nice addition to their collections. |

Poppish keyboardist/arranger Bob James joins with electric bassist Marcus
Miller, drummer Steve Gadd, guitarist Paul Jackson, percussionist Paulinho Da
Costa and (on two songs) guitarist Eric Gale to accompany the distinctive and
always soulful altoist David Sanborn. Sanborn caresses the strong melodies,
mostly originals by James and Miller, and plays well with guest vocalist Al
Jarreau on "Since I Fell for You." One of the best recordings ever
released under Bob James' name (Sanborn gets co-billing) and a big seller. --

September 1, 1960 Digitally Remastered 3 Bonus Tracks This very interesting
LP was a giant step forward for altoist Jackie McLean, although it was
originally released after a couple of his other Blue Note albums. For the
first time, McLean shows some of the influence of Ornette Coleman - not in
his sound but in his improvising approach - and his freer style bridged the
gap between hard bop and the avant-garde. Three of the songs, highlighted by
"Quadrangle" and "Fidel," match McLean in 1959 with
trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Paul Chambers, and
drummer Philly Joe Jones, while the other numbers, which include
"Appointment in Ghana," showcase McLean in a sextet with trumpeter
Blue Mitchell, Tina Brooks on tenor, pianist Kenny Drew, Chambers and drummer
Art Taylor. Jackie McLean's Blue Note albums were the most significant of his
career, and this LP is well worth searching for.

Standard Wonder: The Music Of
Stevie Wonder |
A-Records |
DAVE PIETRO; SCOTT WENDHOLT;
PETER MCGUINNESS; PETE MCCANN; DAVID BERKMAN; SCOTT COLLEY; BRIAN BLADE |
A few of Stevie Wonder's songs
have been performed by jazz musicians, but this CD by saxophonist Dave Pietro
is one of the first extensive explorations of his work outside of pop. Pietro
shifts between soprano, alto, and C-melody saxophones (the latter instrument
hasn't been used very much in jazz since the '30s). Pietro's playing is very
strong throughout the date, and his arrangements are first-rate, often
contrasting sharply with the composer's original approaches. "Another
Star" features Pietro's superb C-melody sax in a modal setting that
seems to occasionally hint at Miles Davis' "Nardis." His tasty
soprano sax is a highlight of "The Secret Life of Plants," a song
that could be overlooked by jazz fans who haven't heard Wonder's original
record, because such a title might easily be mistaken for a typical new age
release. The lively, Latin-flavored "Smile Please" and the lovely
ballad "You and I-Interlude" are also highlights, but the dull
electric piano keeps "All in Love Is Fair" (a favorite of pianist
Marian McPartland, who has performed it many times) from reaching its full
potential. The strong supporting cast includes keyboardist David Berkman,
trumpeter and flugelhornist Scott Wendholt, trombonist Pete McGuinness,
guitarist Pete McCann, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Brian Blade. One can
easily imagine many more jazz musicians following Dave Pietro's lead in
putting together a Stevie Wonder songbook of their own. — Ken Dryden |

Sanborn's better early recordings. Although the record is perhaps best known
for the altoist's version of Paul Simon's "I Do It For Your Love,"
Sanborn's playing on some of the other cuts (most notably
"Mamacita" and "7th Avenue") finds him really stretching
within the R&B/crossover genre. Only "Smile" (which has some
mundane vocalizing) is a minus, and it is more than compensated for by
Sanborn's passionate improvising elsewhere. |

Sauers ->Design Review: Scott Yanow This 1980 recording is an excellent
example of David Sanborn's music. The highly influential altoist is joined by
familiar studio veterans (including guitarist Hiram Bullock and drummer Steve
Gadd) with bassist/composer Marcus Miller being a key figure in creating the
funky rhythms and colorful backgrounds. Miller, who shared the writing chores
with Sanborn, not only contributed his powerful bass, but backed the altoist
during a duet version of "Just for You" on piano. Easily
recommended to fans of R&B-ish jazz. |

NATIVE DANCER was Shorter's first collaboration with Brazilian superstar
Milton Nascimento, and helped introduce Nascimento to American audiences.
Personnel: Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Milton Nascimento
(guitar,vocals); Herbie Hancock(piano,key); Airto Moreira(percussion); Dave
McDaniel(bass); Roberto Silva(drums,percussion); Wagner Tiso(keyboard); Jay
Graydon(guitar, bass); Dave Amaro(guitar). Recorded at Village Recorders, Los
Angeles, California on September 12, 1974. Includes liner notes by Bill
Milkowski. Digitally remastered by Debra Parkinson (CBS Records Studio, New
York). This is part of the Columbia Contemporary Jazz Masters series. This
album is a rare gem. A lush Brazilian-jazz hybrid, it was released in the
midst of Wayne Shorter's tenure with Weather Report, after an astounding run
of inventive post-bop releases for the Blue Note label in the '60s. Five of
the nine tracks were written by Milton Nascimento, and NATIVE DANCER's
success on its release in 1975 served to introduce this fine Brazilian
singer/composer to an American audience. The aptness of the pairing of these
two musicians is readily apparent on a tune such as "Tarde," where
Nascimento's vocal phrasing mirrors Shorter's saxophone. The ensemble is
equally inspired, with Herbie Hancock as adept at the propulsive funkiness of
"Beauty and the Beast" as the luxurious reveries of "Miracle
of the Fishes." One of several essential titles by Wayne Shorter, NATIVE
DANCER offers constant and layered delights from start to finish. |
