| Who We Are... The Local Development Corporation was established in December 1994 in response to concerns expressed to local elected officials by business owners, residents and community leaders. Activists worried about the lack of investment and general deterioration of the Mt. Greenwood Business District. Early efforts at the LRC included a survey of business owners and production of materials to market the area. Through the efforts of 19th Ward Alderman Virginia A. Rugai, city funding was obtained to hire a professional team of planners. A Business District Improvement Plan for 111th Street and Kedzie Ave. was developed in 1997 with urban specialists Camiros. Ltd. The corporation consists of a 12 member Board of Directors, 1 full time Executive Director and 1 part time Administrative Assistant. Board members and staff work continuously toward the implementation of suggestions contained in this improvement plan. Areas are suggested for 'new development emphasis', rehabilitation, improved parking and other amenities. These suggestions are meant to design a business district that better suits the residential component of Mt. Greenwood. A copy of this plan is available at the LRC office for review. What we do Initially, most of our focus was information gathering, developing a vision with the community, establishing relationships, and marketing. As our corporation grew stronger, we purchased properties to assemble more attractive parcels, initiated renovations on others, and persuaded owners to do their own investing in their properties. |
