Raggedy Ann and Andy
We really enjoyed our discipline based arts unit on Raggedy Ann and Andy.  We read the book Raggedy Ann Stories, we studied the art of Johnny Gruelle, we learned about jazz music, and we learned about what life was like in the 1920's. The Raggedy Ann stories were written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle during the 1920's for his daughter Marcella Delight Gruelle.  It was very interesting to see what life was like during the 1920's as compared to life today. We compared toys of the 20's to toys of today; we also listened to jazz music of the 1920's and compared it with music of today.

Some of the activites we did included drawing Raggedy Ann/Andy portraits, we wrote our own Raggedy Ann story, we did a talents activity: my shoe button became a .....

We concluded our unit on Valentines Day with a Raggedy Ann Candy Heart Party.  One of our favorite stories was How Raggedy Ann Got Her Candy Heart; so this was a perfect conclusion to our unit.  We did a lot of activities with candy hearts:  graphed them, measured with them, sorted them, made patterns, counted, graphed our favorite flavor.  We also did a talent activity:  my heart became
a ......  I put a red heart sticker on each child's paper and they transformed it into something else.
