Against All Odds

Chapter Two:

I went to the garden. There, I sat at the edge of our watered, sculptured fountain. I looked at my reflection by the water in it. It reflected the face of a sad and happy girl. I closed my eyes and breathed.I loved the sound of that pouring water-- it calms my soul. Then, I reminisced our dance. Dave and I. Dave and Liz. Sounds nice. Liz? Did he just called me Liz? I love it. But it doesn't matter. I told him, myself, that it's all right if he could call me that. Then, I heard faint footsteps coming on to my way. I slowly opened my eyes. Hoping it was Dave. But it's not. It's Tracy, my best friend.

"Oh, there you are, Lizy!" Tracy exclaimed. "I thought you're inside. You're supposed to entertain your guests, not moping around, sitting in here."

"Oh,hi, Tracy," I smiled weakly. Tracy sat down next to me. "I just needed some fresh air. It's soo crowded in there."

"Oh, do you mind some company?"

"Yes, uhm, no, absolutely not,"I answered. "Feel free to sit beside me, ok?"

"Ok," Tracy said. "So, have you met the new boy?"

"Who?" I asked innocently. "Dave?" As if I don't know.

"Yeah," Tracy charmed excitedly. "Wasn't he cool?"

"Yup!" I answered feeling crushed. The reason I went out is because of him and there goes my best friend talking about him. Oh,my. "He's fine."

"Fine?" Tracy asked with big eyes. "That's all you're gonna say?"

"Yes," I looked away.

"Well, he's great!" Tracy exclaimed. "Even though, he's a pop star, he's never way too cool ahead of us. He's totally nerve-wracking coz he's soo nice to be with, too." Tracy blabbed on. I don't need to hear any of these!

"Oh," I just reacted. "I got to talk with him a while ago," plus danced with him, I thought. "Gina introduced us."

"Oh, yeah, you do. Of course," Tracy laughed. "He's in your birthday, wasn't that awesome? And besides, he's new in town. Maybe I could..., do you know what I'm thinking?"

Oh,no! Tracy wants to go out with him! "Tracy!" I suddenly said.

"What?" Tracy looked at me, surprised, too. "It's just natural, you know,a boy and a girl would go out with each other. Then,if we liked each other, maybe we could even kiss or if we love each other, we could get down all the way."

I can't bear to hear any of this any longer. I shook my head. "Tracy, you're insane!" Oh,no. Not with Dave. Now, I have a competition with my best friend.

"Why?"

"Well," I answered all to knowingly. "It's just all too sudden. He's still new in town and you're already planning to get your claws on him?"

"Yeah," Tracy answered hard-headedly. "I mean, what if someone took him away from me first? That would be a very bad idea. It will break my heart!" Tracy had a point. What if I took him away first? That would ruin our big friendship. It shot through my heart like a big knife. Ouch! I didn't mean to fall for him or was I? But it's just too soon. My friend wanted him and I liked him, too. Tsk, just when I thought I could talk it over to my best friend.

"Well, what can you say?"Tracy took me back.

"Huh?Nothing. It's just too soon," I replied back. Then, silence filled the air.

"So, Happy Birthday, again, Lizy," Tracy hugged me. "Thanks for being my friend for all these years... I don't want anything to come between us."

I gulped down a little. "Sure, that's no problem. And, thanks."

"So, how's everything going with you and Jeremy?" Tracy continued as we torn apart.

"We're fine, as usual," I told her casually. "Trace, please don't ask me that, ok? FYI, we're not officially a couple yet."

"You're not? But you're dating, " Tracy asked with big eyes. "I thought... how come?"

"Well, that's what you thought," I informed her noddingly. "We're only dating, coz you know, Jeremy has this thing for..." PDA's.

"Hey, Lizy!"

Oh, speak of the devil. Tracy and I looked up. It was Jeremy appearing from out of nowhere.

Jeremy walked toward us. He took my hands. Tracy smiled at us. I faked a weak smile.

"Oh, Lizy, where have you been?" Jeremy asked with a sullen expression on his eyes. Was that puppy love or was that drunk?

I didn't answer his question.

"C'mon, let's talk," Jeremy took my hands and lead me inside the house. I looked at Tracy and shrugged. She just looked hopeful and she smiled.

She didn't know anything about Dave. She didn't hear any of my feelings for Dave and for Jeremy.
