Waiting To Learn

Short Story: “One is never too old to yearn.”

“Waiting to Learn”

One Friday evening, Gardeska Margarette, a 16-year-old girl, wants to use their computer. But first, she had to ask permission from her mom.

“Mommy, can I use the computer?” she patiently asked.

“Why?” mom asked.

“I’ll just check on my diskettes and delete some of my files,” she answered.

“Ok, sure, no problem, dear,” mom said at last.

“Thank you, mommy,” then she kissed her mom on the cheek. She excitedly went to their computer room and operated the machine.

“Well, I have to look at my disks first,” so she filed all her diskettes and she picked one out to put in the CPU. She clicked on run and entered but the problem is, it doesn’t read the diskette’s files.

Oh, no! Gardeska thought. What could possibly be the problem of her diskette? Maybe her computer?

“Shucks! Please don’t let this thing to happen!” she said to no one in particular. So she ejected her diskette from the CPU and waited! Oh, no! The diskette’s torso isn’t complete.

So she called on to her mom. “Mom, we got a problem.”

“What, dear?” mom asked.

“The diskette’s metal portion was stuck inside our CPU,” she replied wearily.

“Oh, Gardi,” mom said. So she went to the computer room. She logged off the computer. Then, she let Gardeska to look for a flashlight and some little screwdrivers. Minutes later, Gardeska came back with those things.

Then, Mrs. Margarette unscrewed the back of the CPU while Gardeska patiently waited beside her. After a few minutes, thank God the metal was pulled out.

What a relief! Gardeska thought. That was close. “Thank you, mom,” she replied back. Then everything went back to normal.

“You know, Gardeska, thank God I’m not yet too old for these things,” mom replied back. “What if I’m too old, you’ll never do this all by yourself.”

“Oh, mom,” Gardeska replied and hugged her mom. “Thank you, thank you so much.” Then she carefully went back to their computer.
