Atlanta Perimeter

The Atlanta Perimeter (I-285 & Unsigned GA 407) was built in the late 60's a part of the national Interstate Highway System. The highway is about 60 miles long and is more a north-south oval than a true circle. Of course, as were many of the beltways around the country, it was meant as a bypass for thru traffic, and ended up becoming a sort of "main street" for many of the edge cities around Atlanta, with several shopping malls near it, as well as the highway forming the southern border of Atlanta Hartsfield Airport.

Georgia state highways exist concurrently with ALL US & Interstate routes. Georgia does not post concurrent highway numbers on their interstate highways. Additionally, Georgia state highways numbers are not always posted with their US counterparts on Interstate signage. ALL highway numbers are shown on this table. Routes that are posted on their co-existing US routes, but are not posted on the corresponding interstate exits are posted inside parentheses. Unposted numbers are shown in GREY in standard route shields. Georgia Interstate exits are numbered concurrenly as of this date (6/99). On January 1, 2000, all exits in Georgia will be renumbered, based on mileage. New exit numbers are shown in (RED). All signage will be changed during January of 2000. The new exit scheme will be limited to Interstate Highways -- state limited-access roads (Lakewood Fwy/GA 154-166; GA 400; US 78/GA 410) will be exempt from this.
