CONCERT BAND

THINGS ALL WOODWIND PLAYERS SHOULD HAVE:

Extra Rico Royal or Vandoren reeds ($15-$25 per 10ct. box): A Vandoren reed is always .5 thicker than a Rico Royal so if you are used to playing with 2.5 Rico Royals and want to switch to a similar thickness Vandoren, buy a size 2.

Rovner Ligatures ($16-$20): Having a good ligature will improve sound because it holds the reed more snug on the mouthpiece than the standard metal ones.  Having a snug and even fit will help the reed vibrate more evenly giving the instrument a cleaner and fuller sound.

A Swab to clean out the shaft of your instrument after playing.  After a while, your instrument will build up grime, sweat, and dirt in the keys.  Swabbing your instruments will help keep them cleaner.

Have your instruments cleaned at a shop at the beginning of the school year and during winter break.

THINGS ALL BRASS PLAYERS SHOULD HAVE:

Trumpet Mutes (Straight):  Avoid buying the red and white Humes & Berg brand and go for a Jo-Ral or Yamaha brand.

THINGS PERCUSSIONISTS SHOULD HAVE:

Stick Bag with a pair of drum sticks (5A), timpani mallets (general), rubber or yarn xylophone mallets.
