My Place In The Universe

I saw Jupiter and I swerved. The moon
was on a path with it. I pulled over to
the side of the road because I had read
that looking east tonight it would swoon
by it. That beyond them both cold in dead
space other things would be visible, instead,
it all glowed hot. They burned through the
black beyond the atmosphere before me,
local things, really, like the smoke stack
down at the smelting factory. Coming
through like the 605 night run on the central
railway out in the wilderness. Dependable,
I thought. Then I thought, two things out there
making their run, having some fun, one,
Going around us and the other about the sun.
Reassuring, I decided. I nodded at that and
felt warm in the face of it. I knew if I told
my wife about this, having had a couple’a beers,
she’d give me that look that was all about this
world. Then I thought I could make out her smile
off near the Pleiades. And I knew I would love her,
anyways.
