Long Lake 1998 Event Report

Message From Vicky

Hi Church

Just a note to say thank you for coming this weekend, and doing such a great job. You are all our family and great friends. I wanted to make a statement in Long Lake and you all sure helped me to do that.

Everyone is talking about the event, even the ones who didn't come to see it.

I couldn't have done it without you. Haven't got time to write much now, but will soon, and hope to see you real soon.

Love Vickie

Event Report Newark Valey NY
by Pvt Church

Cloudy periods with a 7/8 moon is what greeted us on our way down to Newark Valey. Due to a few delayes we left late and arrived at the Naughtons at aproximately 11pm. We were greeted by Bob Gorbea and his better half and the Naughtons.

Pizza was siting on the table and refreshment ready to be taken. All were in good cheer as we started settling down and unwinding from our trip.

The jokes started flying almost immediately as we arrived and it was good to see friends again. On their mile wide screen the Movie Gettysburgh was playin and the house created a feeling of relaxation and a great big WELCOME to all that had just arrived.

After talking for a good long while it was decided that sleep would be a good thing to get calculating that we had to be up early the next morning.

Morning came to the sound of the Connie busy in the kitchen making breakfast. (This is becoming a tradition. I think eventually that we will have to get a donations box made up) The Naughtons outdid themselves again with great food and all at the table had great big smiles.

We left for the event at 10 and got there with plenty of time to spare. Walking in I ran into many familliar faces including the ones of the McDaniel's which is always a pleasure for me to see. The battle went off without an itch as we died valiently on the field of honor. We being assigned to the 137th N.Y. Infantry. (The Organizers) I saw many hits being taken including one great Artillery one. After the battle some members of the 12th Regulars were promoted and all of us had a chance to chat with many spectators and re-enacters.

At approximately 5pm we retired to our winter quarters (AKA Naughton's Bed & Breakfast) for our meeting and elections. Then headed towards FitzPatrick's Pub to help the local economie.

Connie and Frank had been priming the waitress there into believing that the guest that they were bringing did not speak a word of english. (Do not believe they're sweet and innocent act) Starting on cue Bob Gorbea started speaking Spanish and yours Obd Servant French. The waitresses finally managed to get our orders down after making funny movement and chicken sounds to describe the menu. After we had ordered the waitress with relief said "Thank You" and Bob Responded in English "You're Welcome" she was shocked for a minute before I introduced myself also in english. I must thank the ladies for being such good sports and playing the game to the point where a Spanish/English dictionary was brought in.

I must admit that the food at FitzPatrick's was great and the service and company better. We lived it up for a while at FitzPatrick untill it got late and then we headed back to our winter quarters.

The next morning we got up had breakfast and again returned to the battle front. This time accompanied by Connie, Frank and their daughter & grand daughter which joined us there by train. Within the first 5 minutes of being there Patrick was draged into a barrel for selling discharge papers to members willing to pay for them. (I must admit that look does suit him). After the battle we had refreshments (Milk and Cookies) before saying our adieux to friends and departing for our respective homes.

I would like to thank the 137th NY for a great event (I do believe we will make this one an annual one) and the Naughton's for their great hospitality as usual.

Event Report Rockton
by Pvt Church

Burning Cars , Traffic James , Heat , Humidity is what I encountered on the way down. This was surely not the way the event went.

Yours Devoted Pvt Church left for the Rockton event by my lonesome at aproximately 10 am on the 7th Day of August 1998. My continuous insults at cars in the passing lane going slower than the SLOW lane. Near Trenton Ontario cars were backed up for nearly 20 miles. When I finally got to the culperate I discovered that the great Canadian Road Block was created by a short 100 span where the two lanes converged due to construction. Traffic flows very well if people do the zipper.

That’s enough about the drive down. I found the event very easily using the Ontario Map and Info Seek Map was also a great bonus. I get to the event to a great reception from the staff. During registration I almost got ran over by Santa Klem driving is car and trailer to the parking lot. After unloading Brad’s gear I managed, with the help of Santa’s Helpers, to put up Betty and Mikes tent. This task was very easy. (thank’s to Santa’s helpers for the great help. Sincerely Ladies it would have taken me forever without you.)

Sudenly I saw a Kilted Fox coming towards me. BTW boys the kilt goes over the knee and please go Regimental (except for Frank of coarse . That could be scary ) .Frank and all the gang were instrumental in helping me get ready.

I missed the Tactical due to 2 hour sleep on Friday night but from all the people that attended it they said it was great. The Twilight battle on Saturday was a great pleasure to be in under the guidance of the 49th N.Y. After the battle us gentleman gathered back at the camp for the wounderfull after battle mints.

The tactical left many of our strong soldiers very tired and they had to be put in bed early. A few of us had some laughs and livations around the old camp fire. A good time was had by all.

An unexpected influenced us in Sundays battle. (It was raining chevrolets) which added a very interesting and fun aspect to the battles. After battle we all gathered in a log church and sang song to scare the finale rain away. (It worked)

The ride back was pretty much uneventfull with the exception of driving in the dark from Kingston to Highway 416/401 connection. That problem was quickly remedied and all ended up well. Overall I enjoyed myself thoroughly at Rockton this year.
