"IF IT'S NOT SCOTTISH, ITS CRAP!"

The name 'Luckenbooth' is derived from the fact that these were sold from locked booths in the Royal Mile adjacent to St. Giles Cathedral.

It would be given by the man to his love or betrothed and was subsequently pinned to the shawl of the first baby to protect it from evil spirits and to ensure the passage of love to the newborn.

The Claddagh (pronounced CLAW - DA) is a Gaelic symbol which represents "Love and Friendship".

The Claddagh consists of two hands, a heart and a crown. The origin of the Claddagh goes back four centuries to the Galway Bay Region in Ireland, where it was first exchanged as a betrothal ring.

The original expression which accompanied the passage of the "Claddagh" was:

"With these hands I give you my heart and I crown it with my love."
