Do They Care

Groups spend millions so the flag can wave,

But have we forgotten the Vets and the sacrifices they made?

We all love our flag; when we see it, we stare,

Politicians cutting benefits, is it really fair?

With our country at war, we had to go,

The politics behind it, we didn’t even know.

Our freedom was at risk so the politicians did say,

Our brother Vets need help, no one wants to pay.

As elections draw near, all promise to do their share,

As time passes by, they really don’t care.

When we returned from war, we came home alone,

Now they close the hospitals and send us home.

Manny lost his legs on Iwo as he led the way,

Now 50 years later, he now has to pay.

“Injuries aren’t that bad,” say the Powers That Be,

Ask Joe who at 18 lost the ability to see.

We all love the flag, but it’s just cloth and string,

But as guys in Nam said, “It don’t mean a thing.”

Veterans gave us our freedom we enjoy this day,

Yet we elect politicians who turn the other way.
