Rene
Ricard |
'Basquiat"

The role of Rene Ricard is a
very different one to many of Michael's other parts. Rene is a flamboyant
art critic, who has gained acceptance among the creme de la creme of New
York's art elite through his writing. He helps launch Basquiat's career
and befriends him, only to be stabbed in the back. The cast for this movie
include Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper and David Bowie as pop artist
Andy Warhol. |

Rene Ricard sits in the park
writing. He is an art critic whose fluency and flamboyancy is mirrored
in his work. Through his writing he can reach his audience far better
than he can in person. |
|
|
By chance Rene meets Jean-Michel
Basquiat for the first time and is extremely impressed with the young
artist's work. |
Rene helps Basquiat get his first
gallery showing of his work. With Basquiat's talents and Rene's contacts
and business sense, the art critic's darling is destined for great
things. |

Rene at the art exhibition. |
Basquiat gives Rene a painting he
has almost finished, calling it 5-11 after the time he gives it to him.
Rene is obviously touched by the gesture, and delighted beyond
words. |
|
|
As Basquiat continues to work at
his art, Rene sleeps on the couch, waiting for him to finish. |
Basquiat is persuaded into
selling 5-11 to a wealthy art collector. Rene overheard the conversation
and cannot believe that Jean-Michel would sell the painting he has given
to his friend. |

|
Reality sinks in for Rene.
Basquiat has sold his beloved painting, putting the money offered for it
above his friendship. Rene's face betrays his hurt and realization that
he has just been used. Rene tells Basquiat what he thinks of him and
then storms out of the exhibition. |
Later that evening, Rene has been
drowning his sorrows and is by now quite drunk. He creates a scene at an
exclusive restaurant, and is eventually thrown out in the funniest scene
of the movie. |
