Minutes of August 18th meeting

Meeting was called to order at 3:40pm by Pres. Mitch Bowman.  We had 21 members at the potluck & 18 members were present at the meeting. It was wonderful to see Clarence & Jean Sheufelt here in attendance.

Officers Reports

President - No Board Meetings to report

Vice Present - Dan Hovater reported on a couple of festivals being held the end of this month: Lenawee Co. Historical Festival & Conklin Organ Museum in Hanover.

Secretary - Dan Hovater made a motion to accept the minutes of our June 9th meeting as presented in that month's MGN, seconded by Hank Hoppe. Motion carried.

Secretary's Correspondence Report - Jeanne read Lenore Semposki's report on this year's Learning Fair.  Mike Hoover reported that next year they plan on having a "sand box" set up filled with a variety of rocks & minerals.  Children can find up to 6 specimens that will be identified for them.  We need donations of specimens & egg cartons (which will be used for each child's specimen kit).

Also, Sally Hoskins had been in contact with Dan Hovater regarding correspondence (i.e. raffle tickets) she was still receiving from the Toledo Rock Club.  Jeanne contacted the Toledo club to update their mailing list/contact info.

The Toledo Gem & Rockhound 36th Annual  Show will be held September 7, 8 & 9 at the Stranahan Theater Complex, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd.; Toledo. Fri. 2-9, Sat. 10-6, Sun. 10-5; adults $4, seniors (55+ with ID) $3

Treasurer - Lori Tsutsui presented all balances & assets for July.  Report accepted as filed.

Standing Committee Reports

Sunshine Report:
Linda Moorehead had cataract surgery on one eye & is healing nicely.  This Tuesday, Linda will be having surgery for the other eye. We wish Linda a speedy recovery.

Betty Heath attended our potluck & reported that Ron Roberts continues to battle cancer that has spread widely throughout his body.  We wish to extend our thoughts & prayers to Ron as he continues his battle.

Mitch Bowman is recovering well after his May 28th surgery & should be 100% very soon.

2008 Show Report
Chairman Jim Bretes created a new Vendor Application form which, if printed on NCR paper, can be used for future shows.

A 1st draft of next year's show flyer was distributed. Note: Show times were reduced from previously recommended times.

Jim also compiled a list of restaurants & hotels in the area to assist Show Vendors.  GREAT JOB JIM!

Silent Auction Workshop:
We wish to have specimens bagged & tagged for next year's Silent Auction completed BEFORE the snow starts flying!  Listed are 4 Silent Auction Workshop dates (Please mark your calendar!)

SILENT AUCTION WORKSHOP
Wed. - Aug. 29th  4pm - 8pm
Wed. - Sept  19th  4pm - 8pm
Wed. - Oct.  17th  4pm - 8pm
Sat. Nov. 3rd  1pm -5pm with POTLUCK

Jim also pointed out that the Beading Babes have been bearing the costs for our club's hourly drawing prizes at our annual show.   Pres. Mitch B. approved expenditure of up to $100.  Bev B. said that donations of costume jewelry would be most welcome.  Small rock & mineral specimens would do nicely too!  PLEASE DONATE!

Jeanne B. brought to our attention that since the sale of our previous clubhouse site, we do not have a point of contact for vendors applications, new membership applications, scholarship applicants, etc.  She noticed, while browsing the internet, that MGMS is still linked with the Napoleon address.  As officers' addresses may change yearly, she suggested that the club obtain a P.O. Box in Jackson for ALL club business.  We will need 2 keys, 1 for the Treasurer & 1 for the Secretary.  Francis Luttermoser made a motion that we obtain a P.O. Box in Jackson, Hank Hoppe seconded.  Motion passed.

Beading Babes will be meeting Wed., Aug. 22nd at 6:30pm at the Baldwin residence.  They will be learning a variation of Right Angle Weave.
Contact Bev with questions, etc.

Next meeting: Sept. 10th at 6:30pm at the Baldwin residence.  "Babes" to be working on Hourly Drawing prizes for the show as well as personal projects. Bring your supplies, costume jewelry, etc.

Field Trips:
Special thanks to Mike Hoover for organizing our UP trip in Mitch's steed.  Lori Tsutsui gave a wonderful review of the UP Trip.  They explored several mines, museums, road cuts, Gift shops, etc. & hunted for Taconite, copper, banded hematite, crystals, horned coral, agates & other lovely specimens.  They also enjoyed shopping at Da Yooper's Tourist Trap in Ishpeming, the scenic Canyon Falls south of L'Anse & found out what a    P-A-S-T-Y was!  Everyone had a fabulous time & want to know "when is the next field trip?"

North Caroline Trip: Jim B. gave a brief review of our June NC fieldtrip.  Everyone most enjoyed the Gem Mountain & the Bushy Creek Mine where Aquamarine, Tourmaline, and Beryl (not burro) was found. (grin)

A colorful commentary of Mitch, Jeanne & Debbie's "free" day of exploration was given.  The locals give directions according to the number of cracks in the road and in which "holler" you were in!

Jerry & Rose went panning for gold on Friday and returned to the motel 2 pooped puppies but had a great time & we're excited to hear of their results.

Unfinished Business

By Laws Change: An amendment to change our meeting times & dates has been posted twice.  Mike Hoover made a motion to amend our By Laws, to read:
Article III – Regular Meetings

Section 1.  Regular meetings shall be held on the second Saturday of each month, at 1:00 PM at such places to be announced.

Frances Luttermoser seconded. Motion passed

501C7 vs. 501C3: There have been several board meetings and discussions at our meetings regarding changing MGMS from a 501C7 IRS status to a 501C3.  After further discussion, Mike Hoover made a motion that Michigan Gem and Mineral Society of Jackson file for the 501C3 status with a $10,000 annual profit cap.  Jim Bretes seconded.  Motion passed with 1 abstention.

Pres. Mitch Bowman & Treasurer Lori Tsutsui plan to meet Aug. 23 or Aug. 24 to start filing process.

MGMS forms: Previously, it has been asked that Committee Chairpersons, Officers, etc. send in a "general guideline" (manual) of their duties & procedures for future reference.

With that in mind, 2 form letters/applications were drafted and passed out at our meeting for review.

1. New/Renewal Membership Application
No changes were suggested on this draft.

2. $250 Scholarship Application

Mike Hoover pointed out a couple of corrections that need to be made on the Scholarship application; i.e. GPA requirement for scholarship, scholarship for Earth Sciences/Lapidary fields.

Treas. Lori T. made a very good point when she said that she would like to see the scholarship award be sent to the colleges instead of a check written payable to the recipient.

New Business

Next Year's Fieldtrips: Mike H. pointed out that in order for members to go on fieldtrips, they have to put in for vacation time the 1st part of each year.  Therefore, WE NEED to have our fieldtrips (dates)
established by January 1st of each year.

Suggested extended-day fieldtrips for 2008:
Cobalt Mine - Cobalt, Ontario, Canada
Herkimer Mine - New York
Arkansas - (quartz crystals, etc)-during spring break

Day fieldtrips:
Hansen Quarry - Ohio
Lake Michigan - (Septarians, agates, etc.)
Grand Ledge
Graymont Quarry - Ohio

PLEASE CALL MITCH BOWMAN IF YOU ARE WILLING TO PLAN ANY OF THESE TRIPS!

Silver Smiting Class: Orville Gose was asked if he would be willing to teach a Silver Smiting class.  Orville has agreed.  If you are interested, please contact Jeanne B. to be placed on the class list.  Further info/costs. TBA.

There being no further business, meeting adjourned at 4:45pm

Labor Day - The holiday began in 1882, originating from a desire by the Central Labor Union to create a day off for the "working man". It is still celebrated mainly as a day of rest and marks the symbolic end of summer for many.
