Minutes of March 8, 2007 meeting

Meeting was called to order by Pres. Mitch Bowman at 7:31 p.m.  We had several new faces: Linda Grostefon and her 2 sons, Cynthia Seppa also brought her daughter, and Thurman & Sue Estep were in attendance.

Secretary's Report: Mike Hoover made a motion to accept the February 8th minutes as printed in newsletter; seconded by Betty Heath.  Motion passed.

Vice-President's Report: VP Dan Hovater reported that he has not had a response from Keicher Middle School and has also talked to Frost Elementary.  During Dan's report, it was reiterated that school children are Free Friday morning.   It was also discussed that ANY groups or individuals that attend in uniform (BSA, Fire Fighters, Military, etc.) will attend free of charge.

Earlier this afternoon, Dan and our 2 Scholarship recipients appeared on JTV.  Due to Steven's work schedule, the scholarship awards will be presented Friday afternoon instead of Saturday.

Dan has requested that if you have any "knapable" material, please bring it to our show as he is very low on supplies.

Vice President's Report as presented by VP Dan Hovater

Secretary's Correspondence Report: Jeanne received a phone call from Rose Morris who reported that Jerry was able to move the Lyon's sign over to the Masonic Lodge.  She also received phone calls from Thurman Estep, Francis Luttermoser and Cynthia Seppa; all of whom offered to be "Somebody Else" during our show!  Many thanks to you all!

Treasurer's Report: Treasurer Lori Tsutsui reported our current checking, savings and petty cash balances.  Mike Hoover made a motion and Bob Moorehead seconded that Treasurer's report be filed as submitted.

Standing Committee Reports

Sunshine Report: Linda Rutan was absent.  However, Betty Heath reported that Life Member Phyllis Drew is under the weather.  Ron Roberts was in attendance!  It was GREAT to see you Ron! There wasn't an update on Hazel Morgan's recovery from a broken wrist.  Francis Luttermoser is recovering nicely from a knee injury & was in attendance.  Mike Hoover has recently undergone major surgery that will require a 3-4 month recovery period.  Although Mike is a "trooper" & was in attendance, he appeared to be a "pooped-petunia"!  We wish Mike a speedy recovery.  It was also reported that Orville Gose is undergoing further testing as well as Jim Bretes.  We wish for quick diagnosis to get well soon!

Show Report: Bob Moorehead reported that the show tables have been rented and will be delivered in time for the start of our show set-up, Thursday March 15th at noon.

Raffle Report: Betty Heath reported that sales are excellent thanks to the efforts of Thurman Estep who has already sold over 100 raffle tickets!  KUDOS ! ! ! !

Displays/Demonstrators: Bev Baldwin reported that Display plans and a line up of Demonstrators is set and we are ready to go!  But . . . . . .

Our cloth table covers have disappeared!  Anyone with knowledge of where these little critters have wandered off to, please contact Bev
IMMEDIATELY!

Mitch B. was in contact with Mary Carrier regarding the missing "show postcards" and was informed that, to her knowledge, those postcards were sent back to the clubhouse.

Mike Hoover has the blank ones for this year's use and will work with Lori Tsutsui in setting up a table at this year's show.

Silent Auction: Diane Good was not in attendance.  Rose Morris reported that all Silent Auction items have been set up but she is sure we need members to sign up for Silent Auction duties at the show.  If you have even a couple hours to volunteer, please contact either Diane Good or Rose/Jerry Morris.

Signs: As reported, the Lyons sign is at the Masonic Lodge.  However, Rose stated that the sign was in "pieces" either from being knocked down from high winds or a vehicle.  Jerry and Lyons club members were able to repair the sign (whew!).  The Morris' have the other club show signs.

Security: Mike Hoover reported that security is all set up.

Liaison/Door: Lenore Semposki had a sign-up sheet at the meeting.  We are in need of further help at the door. (Hint! Hint!)

Our Thursday, March 15th Potluck at 6:00 p.m. is about ready.  There will be between 40-45 people.  Lori Tsutsui said she will be supplying the ham!  Wow!  Thank you, Thank you Lori!  Bring your helping hands, a dish to pass and your appetite!  Plates and plastic serving utensils will be available.

Advertising: Michelle Schumacher reported that Channel 6 and Channel 10 have web sites where she filled out forms with our show info.  WITL already had it listed on their web site!  Thanks Michelle.

North Carolina Field Trip: Jim Bretes will have the trip information at our show.  Confirmations for the NC Field trip (June 9 - 13) need to be done by the end of our "Gem Heaven in '07" show!

Other Field Trips: Club members discussed other field trips they would like to attend.  One suggestion for a 3-4 day trip was to Michigan's Upper Peninsular in late summer or fall.  Mitch B. offered to organize this field trip.

Local field trip suggestions were:
(1) Return trip to Grand Ledge
(2) Trip to Holland, MI to find Septarian nodules
(3) Trip to Co-Sci in Toledo, Ohio

We need to get these organized and listed on our Upcoming Events calendar.

Gem-O-Rama: Jeanne B. reported that all the specimens are ready & Mitch had made a Gem-O-Rama wheel.  A sign up sheet was available at the meeting.  We still need volunteers
For 2 hour shifts all 3 days of the show!

Membership/Invite Table: Mike Hoover will organize the table & requested new photos of club trips from last year for the display board.  Jeanne B. will email photos.  Club T-shirts will be available at $10.00 each.  Jeanne B. will make sign.

Reminder postcards for next year's show will be available at the Membership Table.  We need 2 drawing gifts.  Bev B. requested that we ask the guests where/how they heard of our show & make note of it in order to find out the best advertising medium for our club.

Other Business:

Jim B. informed us that the yellow shopping baskets are ready.
Attention Door Volunteers! Don't let people remove the shopping baskets from the building!

Bob Moorehead recommended that MGMS financial information be discontinued from our newsletter.  All in attendance agreed.

Bob also made note that advertising in the Rock and Gem magazine & Lapidary Journal must now be made 4 months in advance.
