Meeting was called to order by Pres. Mitch Bowman at 1:08pm.  14 members were present.

Officers Reports

President:  No meetings were held.

Vice-President:  Absent.  Attending MUCC meeting.

Secretary:  A request was made for the Secretary's report to be read at the meeting.  There being no additions or corrections, the report was accepted and filed.

Secretary's Correspondence Report:  No MGMS correspondence to report.  On a personal note, Mitch & Jeanne Bowman wish to extend a big "Thank You" hug for all the sympathy cards, emails and phone calls we received do to the loss of Mitch's sister.  "Ya'll are wonderful people! Thank you!"

Treasurer:  Absent.  Club members request a written report.

Standing Committee Reports

Sunshine Report - Linda Rutan reported that Ron Robert's is under Hospice care and will be moved to a Hospice facility soon.  Linda also report that she is doing much better!

Silent Auction Workshop - Bev B. reported we had 5 who attended our Sept. 19th workshop.  Since then we have had a little "critter" problem.  Mice apparently like the flavor of plastic and paper as a dietary supplement!!!  At our next workshop, we will move finished auctions to our shed.  Only 2 more Silent Auction Workshops left!

Next workshop is: October 17th,  Wed. from 4pm - 8pm

Beading Babes - Samples of last month's project were shown - Beaded Christmas Ornament netting.  Beautiful!  Next month's Beading Babes class will be held Nov. 8th at 6:30pm.  Contact Bev for further information.

Fieldtrips - Mitch B. has set up a fieldtrip to Michigan Aggregates (old Bundy Hill Quarry) for Mon., Oct. 15th from 11:00am - 4:00pm.  Should be a lot of fun!

No other fieldtrips have been planned.

Unfinished Business

Nomination Committee - Mitch Bowman volunteered to chair the Nomination Committee.  Rose Morris & Bev Baldwin volunteered to assist.

Diane Good was not able to attend the meeting. However, she asked to be placed on the slate in either the Secretary's position or Publisher/Editor's position with the understanding that she would not be able to attend all the meetings nor would the newsletter always be sent out in a "timely manner".

501C7/501C3 - We have received the application forms from the IRS and Mitch hopes to meet with Treasurer Lori T. soon.

Christmas Potluck/meeting - Bev Baldwin, who had originally suggested a Christmas Basket to the Leoni Twp. Hall, offered to make up the Christmas basket.

The potluck will be held on Saturday, December 8th at the Leoni Twp. Hall.  Set up will be as Noon with the potluck starting at 1:00pm.   No smoking/alcohol allowed.  We will also have our Christmas Present exchange ($5+ gift min.)

Our December meeting will follow which will include election of new officers and board of directors.

New Business

Show Caterer - Several members have expressed their displeasure with the caterer we've used for the past several years.  Jeanne B. suggested we contact some of the area's Church Guilds or school's Booster clubs to see if any would be interested in catering our show next year.  She also made note that the caterers in the past have used our facility free of charge with 100% profit.  Jeanne suggested that future caterers donate a percentage of their profit back to MGMS for use of the kitchen facility.

Jerry Morris knows an individual that might be interested.  Menu suggestions were given and Jerry will report back to the club.  Last year's attendance figure are needed so that a caterer can plan for supplies.

Phone-Chain - It was suggested we implement a Phone-Chain  for when the need arrives.  Jerry M. will set up a format.

President's Closing Remarks
On Sept. 29th, Jeanne & I attended the Traverse City Gem & Mineral Show.  It was held in the old Carnegie Library close to downtown Traverse City.  This club has leased this building for a modest sum & is a beautiful facility for their club's purposes.
The dealers in their show are made up primarily of club members.  Show cased were displays of their activities of the past year.  The highlight was of their fieldtrip to Thunder Bay, Ontario for Amethyst.  Their "finds" were extraordinary!
Their club members were extremely unique across the spectrum, from the young to the Seniors.  All were energetic, optimistic, eager to inform and extremely knowledgeable.
Many members were authors of books; i.e. Kevin Gauthier and Bruce Miller.  They have written 3 books; Michigan Gems -Lake Superior Rock Pickers Guide, Petoskey Stones and one on Septarian Geodes.  There was also a book called "Wall of Silver -A Treasure Hunter's Dream" by Richard W. Kellogg.  Show cased by the club was a display of Quartz Crystal encased in Silver.  This beautiful display peaked people's interest in the history and possibilities that abound throughout our state.
Their demonstrators were showing those interested how to cut and polish their finds in the basement of the facility.
To say the least, I was impressed with their members, the facility and the purpose of their show, which was to peak the interest of the public that attended.
Upon contemplation of our meetings and membership, we are lucky if 10 members show up.  Though I asked for, no one was interested in being the Nomination Chairperson for our upcoming elections.  There seems to be little interest from our club members to volunteer or run for any elected position or committee.
In closing, I feel that unless our members, and I mean ALL of our membership, shows some interest SOON, I am afraid the cobwebs will take over and the dust will be all that remains of this club's past endeavors.
Mitch Bowman, President

There being no further business to discuss, meeting adjourned at 2:27 pm.
