| Minutes of September 8, 2007 meeting
Meeting was called to order at 1:05pm by Pres. Mitch Bowman. 13 members were in attendance. Officers Reports President - No meetings to report Vice President - Dan H. reported that the Lenawee Heritage Festival was a wash out literally! Heavy rain throughout the weekend cancelled several events. L Secretary - Mike Hoover made a motion to accept the minutes of our Aug. 18th meeting as presented in August's MGN. Francis Luttermoser seconded. Motion carried. Secretary's Correspondence Report - Jeanne B. has rented a P.O. Box for our club (6 mos. rental). Our mailing address is: Michigan Gem & Mineral Society of Jackson P.O. Box 6106 Jackson, MI 49204 Jeanne also received an email from her sister who had picked up a flyer for "GeoFest" Oct. 19-20. This may be a nice 1-day fieldtrip for the club! It is presented by Stone Center of Indiana and Indiana Limestone, with contributing support from ARCADIS. $7 admission for adults which includes museum admission. The flyer also says: "Shop for your own geo-treasures. A wide variety of dealers will be selling unique jewelry, minerals, and fossils from all over the world." Treasurer - Lori Tsutsui was absent. Mike Hoover brought in our August bank statement. Pres. Mitch recapped last month's transactions. Statement has been placed on file. Standing Committee Reports Sunshine Report - Linda Rutan was not in attendance. Mitch reported that he's 100% recovered from his operation. Dan Hovater relayed Betty's message that Ron Roberts' health continues to decline. No one has an update of Linda Moorehead's eye surgery. Silent Auction (Workshop) - Bev B. reported that only THREE people showed up for the Aug. 29th workshop: Diane Good, Jeanne B & herself. ATTN MEMBERS!! We only have 3 more workshops to get our Silent Auctions tagged, bagged & set up for next year! Bring in your auction donations! Next workshops are: Wed. - Sept 19th 4pm - 8pm Wed. - Oct. 17th 4pm - 8pm Sat. Nov. 3rd 1pm -5pm with POTLUCK Gem-o-Rama/Grab Bags - Jeanne B. is putting together the $1 Grab bags. More small specimens i.e. rocks, fossils, minerals are needed for bother the grab bags & Gem-o-Rama! Please bring to next meeting! Jim Bretes has suggested a "Super-Size-Me" format be added to the Gem-o-Rama; a person spins the wheel for $.25 (same as before). Whatever number their spin lands on, that person has the option to "Super-Size" their win for $1 more and select their specimen from a 2nd numbered mat which will have larger/better specimens on it. This could be a way to sell some of our specimens that we don't necessarily want to go on the Silent Auction table or have an abundance of. Beading Babes - Next session will be Mon. October 8th at 6:30pm at the Baldwin residence. Their project will be Christmas Ornament Netting. Supplies - $12.00 Field Trips: Mitch B. reported that no one has called to volunteer to set up ANY field trips for next year! Listed below are suggested field trips for 2008. Extended-day fieldtrips for 2008: Cobalt Mine - Cobalt, Ontario, Canada Herkimer Mine - New York Arkansas - (quartz crystals, etc)-during spring break Day fieldtrips: Hansen Quarry - Ohio Lake Michigan - (Septarians, agates, etc.) Grand Ledge Graymont Quarry - Ohio Unfinished Business MGMS Master file - Mike Hoover will contact Jim Bretes to finalize changes to our Scholarship Application form. Applications will be sent to Jackson Co. schools by the end of this month. 501C7/501C3 - Mitch B. reported that he was unable to meet with Lori. T. as planned. However, he called the IRS again. We can roll over our 501C7 right into the 501C3 in one application. The IRS will be sending us the application forms this week. New Business President Mitch B. noted that a Nomination committee for 2008 Officers & Board of Directors will be established by our Oct. meeting. If you would be willing to be our Nominations Committee Chairperson or serve on the nomination committee, PLEASE CALL MITCH IMMEDIATELY! If you are interested in serving in any of the following positions for 2008, please come to our Oct. 13th meeting. President, V-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor/Publisher, Liaison, Board of Director (3) Nominations will be closed at our Nov. meeting with voting at our December meeting/potluck. Christmas Potluck - has been changed to the Leoni Twp Hall, December 8th at 1:00pm. Set up will be at Noon. Please bring a dish to pass. We also will be having our gift exchange again this year (suggested $5+ gift) so please your gift to the potluck. Rose Morris suggested we make up a Christmas gift basket for the Leoni Twp. Hall as a Thank You for allowing us to conduct our meetings & classes there. Mike Hoover made a motion that $60 (max.) be allocated from our general fund for the Christmas basket. Jerry Morris seconded. Motion passed. Dan Hovator asked permission to use our faceting machine. Mitch B. will bring it to our Oct. meeting where Dan can sign it out for 3 mos. There being no further business to discuss, meeting adjourned at 2:10pm *********************************************** What??!! Me attend meetings, group projects, chair a committee, hold an office, set up field trips, volunteer??!! "Me" seems to be waiting for… SOMEBODY ELSE There's a clever young fellow named "SOMEBODY ELSE" There's nothing this fellow can't do. He's always busy, from morning 'til night, Just substituting for you. You are asked to do this, or asked to do that. And what is your ready reply? "Get somebody else, Mr. Chairman, He will do it much better then I". So, next time you're asked to do something worthwhile, Just give them an honest reply.
