Joel was selected 1st Team Class A All-State as both a sophomore and junior by the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. Has good size and speed. As a junior caught 48 passes for 712 yards and 13 touchdowns (including 5 game winning scores) in 12 games. Also returned kicks. As a sophomore had 56 receptions. 1st Team All North selection by the News and Free Press.
