Report on the Refresher Course for earth science teachers
Focal Theme:  Natural Resources Management, Environment and Employment

Sponsor: Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore
Venue: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University,  Hyderabad
Nov. 3  – 15, 2003

In tune with the objective of broad basing of geoscience instruction, the participants included not only teachers in geoscience, but also in civil engineering, environment, and economics. The course was strongly interactive, and all participants were required to make individual presentations, which were moderated by experienced experts.  The highlight of the course was the Roundtable Discussion on “Natural Resources Management, Geoscience Instruction and Jobs”, held on Nov. 3, 2003, with Arun Nigavekar, Chairman, UGC, as Moderator  - it explored various ways and means of addressing the serious situation in geoscience instruction (vide Consensus Document, given later in the text).

The themes of the course have been specifically chosen to address the twin objectives of broad-basing and employment orientation of geoscience instruction: Internet-based geoscience instruction (T. Harikrishnan and Prabhakar Pathak), geomorphology  (V.S.Kale), meteorology (A.A.L.N. Sarma), Coastal Resources Management (R. Shankar & I. Radhakrishna), Land-use planning (M. Anjireddy), Remote sensing, GIS and GPS (I.V. Muralikrishna & D.P. Rao), Agriculture (S.P. Wani  & M.V. Rao), geophysical approaches (K.R. Ramanujachari, S. Murali, and B.S.R. Murthy), Water resources management (V.V.N. Murthy, U. Aswathanarayana, G. Krishnarao, B. Venkateswararao, C.L.N. Sastry), Soil resources management (Hema Achuthan, Prabhu  Prasadini, Saibaba Reddy), and Mineral Resources Management (P.K.Ramam, V. Malleswararao, G.V. Krishnarao). Almost all the resource persons made Powerpoint presentations, and the relative CDs were copied and given to the participants.

In connection with the course, the following public Evening lectures and colloquia on geoscience topics, were organized:
  • Nov. 3 (MO) - U.Cordani (Brazil):  Mahadevan Memorial Lecture  - International Cooperation in teaching and research in geosciences,
  • Nov. 4 (TU): R.N. Bastia (Reliance, Bombay): East Coast gas deposits,
  • Nov. 5 (WE) P. Ramarao:  Paradigm of knowledge-driven economic development;
  • Nov. 6 (TH): Harsh Gupta (DOD, Govt. of India); Ocean development, and geosciences,
  • Nov. 10 (MO)- Colloquium on “Are large scale water transfers necessary?” Discussants: U. Aswathanarayana (Three Gorges Dam, China), and V.K. Jyothi (Inter-basin water transfers);
  • Nov. 12 (WE) Colloquium on  “ How to use R. & D.  In geosciences to create new jobs” – Discussants:  B.L. Deekshatulu, U. Aswathanarayana, V. Divakararao, Prakash Rao

There were two whole-day field excursions: one on Nov. 8 (SA) in Kothapalli watershed to study water and soil issues, and another on Nov. 14 (FR) in Robosand plant in Ankireddypalle to study no-waste technologies in the mineral industries.
