Summary:
Joyce Barnaby is painting in Midsomer Florey when she discovers the body of elderly Ruth Fairfax in the bushes. The woman had been stabbed in the back with a chisel. When dr. Bullard begins his post-mortem, he finds that Ruth Fairfax wasn't an elderly lady, but a woman in her thirties with some good theatrical make-up. Soon after, Barnaby discovers Ruth Fairfax was called Angela Browning, and that she was working for the police. Meanwhile, Troy has been transferred to working on the murder and Barnaby is taken off. Two mysterious policemen, working for a Mark Gudgeon, have taken over enquiries. Angela Browning knew something and was silenced because of it... but what did she know, and who did her in?

Solution

The murderer is Mark Gudgeon. He was undercover as a member of the Midsomer Painting Society, as was Angela Browning. Gudgeon, Browning and the two other policemen knew there was £5,000,000 hidden somewhere in Midsomer Florey, a remnant of a large Heathrow robbery five years previously. Tony Carter, one of the criminals behind the robbery, was given a new identity because he testified against his friends. Gudgeon wanted the money for himself, instead of following the politically correct path, and so he stabbed Browning while Joyce wasn't paying attention.

The money was discovered eventually by Colin Hawksley, the manager of the local bank, but before he could steal anything Tony Carter attempted to rob the bank and retrieve the money; he was foiled by Troy. When Gudgeon and the two policemen tried to steal the money, Barnaby arrested them.
