Episode Fifty
Francesca's eyes wandered across the practically-deserted lounge on the bottom floor of her dormitory. Allan had left her earlier to finish up work at the school, so Francesca had been left to amuse herself with the TV in the lounge. Since most of the girls had either left already or were getting ready to leave for home, she hadn't had any interruptions or distractions. She could finally slow down and think about everything that happened over the past twenty-four hours.
Saying goodbye to Amante had been the hardest thing she'd ever had to do, and the effects of it were still wracking her body with emotions. Crushing a small couch-pillow against her chest, she wondered what her summer would be like without the routine visit to Spain. How would she be able to deal with the loss?
She knew it would be useless to turn to her parents; they were always too busy. With her father running the prospering family business and her mother starting her own business, Francesca knew that she would be pushed to the side for "another time." With no older brothers or sisters to talk to, Francesca was left alone.
That was one of the reasons that she had treasured Amante so much. He had always found little ways to make her feel special. She hadn't thought anyone else could make her feel as good as he did...that is, until Allan came along. The last summer had been hard, for she had gone to Spain and into Amante's arms knowing that back in Midway, Allan was waiting eagerly for her to return home. It had made her feel guilt to the ultimate degree, but still she had left him and headed straight for Amante.
Looking out of the window to her right, Francesca watched the sun make its final descent below the darkened horizon. With night closing in on the small town of Midway, Francesca decided to head up to her room to get some rest. She was greeted with a rather unwanted sight when she rose from her seat.
"Francesca! What a pleasant surprise!" Amber exclaimed sarcastically, her lips curling up into their characteristic snarl.
"I wish I had my fly-swatter. Don't you ever buzz off?" Francesca demanded, placing her hands on her hips.
"I just came down to talk with you about a certain pressing matter that has come up. I'm sure you realize what time it is."
Francesca's eyebrows arched in feigned innocence. "No, Amber. I really can't seem to think of special time it is."
"Don't play dumb, Fran. You may be conniving and manipulative, but you aren't stupid. Miss Midway 2001 is coming up, and I felt we should discuss it."
Francesca huffed loudly before plopping back down on the couch. Picking up the remote, she began flipping through the channels in disinterest. "What's there to discuss?"
Amber stared at Francesca for a moment before shaking her head and standing in front of Francesca to block her view of the television. "I feel that it would only be proper to inform you of everything of mine that's on the line."
Francesca's hardened expression softened for the slightest instant. "Yeah, I remember. We talked about that back at the Ball."
"Yeah, and that was only the half of it. I'm just warning you to keep your little friends away from the ballots. I'm not going to risk losing to you again, Francesca. My days of playing nice are over."

-Francesca vowed to never lose Allan
