| THE FOUNDATION The girl limped slowly over to the railing. She had escaped them for now. Suddenly all the adrenaline rushing through her body slowed and she collapsed. That was when they found her. Andrea Banks had been on the run from The Foundation for four days now, and she had nowhere else to go. The men in military uniforms chasing her never seemed to give, they had even shot her. The Foundation would never let her go, unless she was dead and at the present time that sounded pretty good to Andrea. Cowering in the corner, wondering when they would attack, Andrea looked like a six year old girl who had done something wrong. The men slowly advanced on her and her emerald green eyes flared with fear. Andrea gradually pulled herself up to her full height and looked into their hate-filled eyes. Still the men advanced on her and as they got closer an immense amount of pain ran through Andrea’s body. When she let out a scream the men started to back away. As the pain increased Andrea began to glow and her eyes changed from the beautiful green to a red. At this point the men turned and ran from Andrea afraid of what she was and what she might do to them. Once she was out of danger the pain ceased and she collapsed on the ground exhausted. Andrea awoke several hours later, feeling slightly better. Looking around she realised she was in an alley, Andrea also noticed burn marks surrounding herself and covering most of the alley. Suddenly Andrea realised what it was possible that she had done. She curled up into a ball and began to cry because she could find no trace of the men who had been chasing her and she was afraid she might do the same thing again. That was when she heard the footsteps. Suddenly Andrea bolted upright, trying to find somewhere safe to hide. The only place was behind several garbage bins, some of which were overturned. Andrea ran as quickly as her tired body could carry her. Throwing herself behind the bins, Andrea hid as best she could, not caring if she hurt herself more. Through a gap Andrea could see two people approaching the spot she had just vacated. Sliding lower onto the ground Andrea continued to watch. She noticed that not only were the two not in a uniform but one was not even male. They could not have been sent from The Foundation. Discovering this calmed Andrea down so much that she again gave way to her exhaustion. The noise created when she collapsed alerted the couple to her location. But Andrea didn’t notice, she was already fast asleep. When she awoke, for the third time that day, Andrea discovered that she was no longer in the alley. Looking around it became obvious that it was an expensive apartment belonging to people she did not know. While Andrea was checking out the apartment, the man from the alley came into the room. The man came up to her and guided her back to the lounge where she had been sleeping. He had her lie down again, made her comfortable and then left again. When he came back he carried a glass of water and a tube of cream. He handed Andrea the water so that she had a drink, and then, once she was finished, placed the empty glass on the nearby coffee table. He then took a hold of the tube and the bottom of her shirt, about to place the antiseptic cream on her cuts and bruises. Andrea, however, was uncomfortable with this as it brought back memories of her time with The Foundation. So Andrea took off for the door and the man let her in order to hopefully gain her trust. Just as Andrea got to the door, it opened and in walked the woman. Seeing that there was no way, in her state, that she could fight both of them. Andrea started to freak and suddenly she was overcome with pain again. When Andrea screamed from pain, the couple backed away. Once they were at a safe distance, that was no longer a threat to Andrea, the pain and screaming ceased. Andrea had again collapsed. She did not, however, fall unconscious this time, just struggled to catch her breath. The man and woman did not question Andrea about what had happened to which she was relieved. As they were helping Andrea to the lounge it was revealed that their names are Adam and Linda and that they were married. Not long after that Adam and Linda disappeared into the kitchen to put away the groceries Linda had brought home. Leaving Andrea alone. Suddenly the window was smashed and two operatives from The Foundation, that Andrea recognised, swung through. The man on the left was Manning and on the right was Cursor. If The Foundation had sent these two to retrieve her, then they no longer needed, or wanted, her alive. Unusually both were not in The Foundation’s uniform, which meant that they were being secretive - Just not quiet. Adam and Linda, having heard the crash, came running in just in time to see Andrea start to fight. Manning came at Andrea with a knife but she managed to get out of the way. Again Andrea began to glow and her eyes changed colour, this time though there was no pain. Quickly giving a small zap with her powers and getting him out of the way for awhile, Andrea turned to Cursor. Cursor was a more hand to hand combatant than Manning, so in order to survive this fight all Andrea really needed to do was keep him at a distance and get in some good shots. And that’s exactly what she did. Unfortunately for Andrea, Cursor went down just as Manning got up. Manning was not going to go down as easily as Cursor did, that first shot was a lucky one. Andrea would not be as lucky this time. While all of this was happening Adam and Linda realised that they had brought a monster into their home. That scared them, the thought that someone who looked so innocent could actually be so bad. The fight was, in the meantime, getting worse.... for Andrea. Manning had shot her several times and had aggravated her previous injuries. Now she could barely stand. That was when Cursor came around. In her current condition there was no way Andrea could battle the two of them. She went down again and this time she stayed down... As Cursor put a collar on her, Andrea thought over her life before now. All she had ever known was The Foundation. They were the reason she had these powers. They were the reason she had never been in the outside world. They were the reason she was on the run. For the first time in her life Andrea had been free and happy (in a way) and they had taken it away from her. As Manning and Cursor escorted her out of the building, Andrea looked into Adam’s eyes and saw the fear and hatred she had known all her life. She felt ashamed and turned away. If she had continued to watch, she would have seen Adam’s face soften. He had begun to realise the true story, though Andrea had never had the chance to tell it, and he was sorry. For her and for himself. He vowed to do everything he could to help her get free again. Andrea was then bundled into a helicopter to take her back to The Foundation. For discipline. For Re-training. For more experiments. |
