Day One: Seattle to Kingston
We were cutting it close with setting our departure date for August 13th. The boat was still in dry dock getting a fresh coat of paint on the hull. Scott seized the opportunity to put the labels on the boat though, and it allowed us time to provision for the first leg of the journey.

After some final touchups to the paint on the hull, we loaded the Gata Luna into the slings and dropped her into the water. The paint was undoubtedly still wet when she hit the familiar home of Lake Union.

With clear skies and temperatures pushing the mid-80s were ready to go. Scott parked the van in temporary storage and said his goodbyes to Seattle. While I was only on board for eleven days, Scott would not be back home in Seattle for two months. This is the first shot of Gata Luna back in the water after her paint job. |

Lake Union rests between the larger Lake Washington and the Puget Sound. It is a freshwater lake which contrasts to the salty sound. It also sits higher than the sound and requires you to go through the Hiram Chittenden Locks. In all this is about an hour process to get loaded in alongside all the other pleasure craft and working vessels of the area. The salmon were running so you were able to watch the occasional fish crest the surface. The wind was cooperating nicely, and shortly after exiting the locks in the sound we were able to the sails and head NNW towards Kingston, our first stop on our journey into the San Juans. |
