Day Seven: Roche Harbour, San Juan Island Wescott Bay Reserve Sculpture Park |

Over 100 sculptures from prominent Northwest artists are on display in the 19 acre Wescott Bay Reserve Sculpture Park that is across from the resort's cottages. Bordered by the cottages, the airstrip and Wescott Bay, the park meanders through 2nd and old-growth forest, ponds, and prairie grassland. The sculptures are interspersed amongst this terrain. It is a photographer's dream, and by the look of some of the people we ran across it's a great place to go in an altered state of your choosing. For more information on the park visit here. |

While most of the installations were of the typical "static" variety quite a few included the observer into the art. A particular favorite, titled "You", consisted of a pair of plastic binoculars hung from a pvc frame in the middle of the second-growth section of woods in the park. The lenses had been removed and replaced with mirrors. I lost track of time trying to find the best angle for a shot of this display. I never could find one that suited me and unfortunately photos do not do it justice.

Though in need of a cleaning this was still an amazing sculpture. I particularly like the attention to detail in the hands.

What is it about a naked woman that men just can not keep their hands to themselves? Looking back at these pictures, the amazing thing is that the statue looks so small. It could just be Scott's freakishly-long fingers. My favorite shot is the one on the lower left. Almost as if she is in awe of what an amazing day it is. (Not that I don't appreciate the full frontal shots either!) |

We could understand where the local stoners could spend hours with this statue as well as the binoculars. Below you see the full installation. This would actually be quite fun to do in your own backyard (if you did not have children, that is.) What amazed us was that the mirror was perfectly clean - as if someone come through hourly just to clean it! |

In a case of serendipity, we found ourselves sharing the park with a local fox while passing by the statue seen on the left. We ran across our friend in passing a few times after this encounter. I was never able to get close enough to get a decent picture however. |

The sky was a perfect cobalt blue and so the contrast of the rusted sculpture and the polar opposite in the sculpture I called Steroid Tweezers was amazing. I've always liked the combination of the colors you see in the photograph above. |
