Find Your Scale Quick and Cheap
MMC here... As I worked on these pages and started in on the scales section, the little annoyance that has been pattern recognition finally bit me good and hard. From barre chords, we know that moving a shape up the fretboard one fret raises the tone by one-half step. It only follows that the same logic applies to scales.

Indeed, scales DO follow an exact pattern. Once you know how to play a Pentatonic Major in A, you automatically know how to play it in any other key -- just move your root up or down the fretboard as appropriate. This calculator works on that simple principle as well.

To use, just select a Key and a scale type from the drop down menus, and the graphic will immediately update to reflect your scale. Remember that while you can play scales all on one string, to develop soloing skills you'll want to stay in 'boxes' and switch boxes periodically to vary your sound.

   White: Fifth (of Root)
   Blue: Blue Note
Happy scaling!
