My Models

To while away the winter hours.

All the models are balsa plank on a framework of thin ply. I copied the outline of the sailing trawler from a book, either "Sailing Trawlers" or "From Tree to Sea", I can't remember which. This Christmas after 30 years of it being half finished, I completed the motor trawler Accord. The Accord and Dr.Syn were measured "in the flesh" so to speak, the trawler took a bit longer to measure as when I needed the underside dimensions the tide was out and she was laying over on her legs.

The Accord has been decommissioned, and is the centre of attraction at the amusement park in Folkestone. The wheel house on the model is as was when measured, it had since been changed to a steel one. The model is scaled to about 40/1

The Master Hand was built in Rye in 1920, I don't know how she ended her days. The model of this 70' sailing trawler is at a scale of 44/1

.

Dr.Syn, scaled at 22/1. Built in Sept 1972 by Moores of Wroxham and still going strong

Notice the Gaz stove and pot fallen over on the floor, reminds me of a night I was anchored safely out of the way, or so I thought, with the tent up and a good curry on, when a trawler came full pelt up the river and nearly rolled me over with her wash. I saw her lights some way off but hadn't realised the speed she was doing, and as I was anchored I could do nothing only hold on. The first wave rolled me, and as we went over that one we rolled into the 2nd wave, the tent took the force of this one and we came up OK except for the curry. If the tent hadn't have been up we would have filled with water.
