Fuselage Construction - Continued
>> Back to Page 1
Well, I guess not totally completed..
Here I added the wing hold down block, which I tapped with a 1/4 thred and used THIN CA to harden.
Fuselage is completed!  Once sanded it looks great.  Spent about 4 hours to complete.
Added triangle stock to beef up the firewall, and added the floor for the fuel tank. The fuse is completed, but a little rough, needs sanding.
Next I worked on the "tail feathers" on the plane.  The leading edge of the vertical stabilzer, horizontal stabilizer, and trailing edge of the rudder were sanded round.  I did that by cutting a 1/2" piece of PVC pipe down the middle, and glueing in a piece of 100 and 220 grit sandpaper.  Worked great.  Then I notched out and drilled holes into the two elevators, to epoxy in the music wire that joined them together.  I also notched out and drilled a hole into the bottom of the rudder to attach the tail wheel arm.  I used CA and fiberglass tape to make sure it will not come out.  Finally, I sanded the leading edge of the elevator, so it was beveled and could move freely once hinged.
Getting closer, I need to glue in the control rod tubes to the fuselage, they were later trimmed flush with the side of the fuselage
More Wing Construction
Thought I was done with the wing - not quite.  I had to drill the holes to attach the wing to the hold down block - for the nylon bolts
Next I drilled the hole and epoxied in the 1/4" dowel that holds the wind into the airframe.
Sig also recommends that you use fiberglass tape on the wing joint.  First I tacked down the tape with spray adhesive, then soaked it with thin CA.  Then sanded furioursly for a smooth finish. Here is one deviation from the kit - CAPSTRIPS on the ribs, which were recommended in the Covering RC Airplanes book I just bought.
COVERING
This is me holding my newly covered wing.  I am using a read and black trim scheme with red/white checkerboard trim.  I am using Hangar 9 Ultra Cote and Easy Cote.    Here are some shots of the covering process thus far.
Cockpit and edges covered.
Bottom of the fuselage, ran out of Ultracote to finish
Top of the wing, with contrasting black ailerons Bottom of wing, read/white checkerboard trim on ailerons
Top side of tail feathers She is all covered!
Bottom of tail feathers, red/white checkerboard trim
See the final photos on it's maiden flight on 8/13/05!
