The Friday Happening
Dear
Parents and Whiz Kids:
Each
Friday, beginning in October, we will have an event called the Friday
Happening. It is a public
speaking, creative storytelling, and art activity. Each student needs to make (at home) a visual aid out of the
material for the month, and then create a story that goes along with the visual
aid. On the Friday they are
scheduled, each student then presents their story in front of the class. Each story should be around two
minutes, and ten students will present each week, with a rotating schedule.
The Friday Happening works
as follows:
1. Your child creates (at home) a visual
aid using the object on the attached list. An aluminum can or tin can is the first object.
2. Next, your child creates (at home) a
two-minute fictional story to go along with the visual aid.
3. Your child practices the story at home,
either in front of parents or a mirror with a timer.
4. Your child presents the story in front
of the class.
The students will be graded
on the following:
* length of presentation (two
minutes is the goal)
* eye contact with the audience
* creativity and quality of the
story
* creativity and construction of
the visual aid
* loudness
of voice, emotional expression, and body expression
* smoothness
in the delivery of the storytelling (evidence of practice)
The Friday Happening is a
week-long homework project that should be worked on each night throughout the
week itŐs to be presented. Do not
let your child wait until Thursday to begin the project. No class time will be given to create
the visual aids or to practice the story.
Feel free to give your child some help with his/her presentation and the
visual. The goal is that this is a
fun learning experience.
Thank you for your help.
Mr. Hu
