The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (4/2) As I mentioned in the winter, Maddie used to be the laziest walker in the world. In about 20 steps, it was even money that she would ask to be picked up. That all changed. About a month ago, she started to ask to go for a walk after dinner. For her, "a walk" meant her running the whole way, with us walking fast, trying to catch up. We thought it'd be around the block-- she kept going for about 3/4 of a mile. She loves to run, pretending she's an engine pulling a train over the hills. Last weekend we drove to Turkey Run (some woods overlooking the Potomac) and hiked for a couple of miles of very rugged terrain. Birthday! (5/29) Maddie turned four. We had a Spongebob Squarepants-themed birthday party, with a Spongebob cake, many island-motif decorations, bubbles, a pool, and fishing. She got many cool presents. The afternoon ended in woe when a magnet from a fishing pole knocked off her head, cutting her. |

Her best friend Nicky (above) Nicky's her best pal from day care. Language (5/30) Maddie's really got a pretty good vocabulary. And she knows a lot of expressions. Including "it's just an expression", which she used on me after I asked her what she meant by some crazy statement. While we were shopping for birthday decorations and talking about Easter Island masks, she suddenly yelled "Speaking of which!" as she spotted a giant one. Kinda makes clear what expressions we overuse. |
