maddie diary   winter 2001-2002
Reading

From looking at grade-level lists, the books Maddie's reading are at the 2nd and 3rd-grade level.  In the fall and early winter, she loved the Nate the Great, Henry and Mudge, Oliver Pig, and Poppleton books.  Now, she's getting into chapter books (almost no pictures).  Not that she doesn't WISH they had more pictures, she's just found out that the stories are a lot better in the chapter books.

Her current favorites are the Magic Tree House books.
Dinosaurs are still in the mix.  Here was last year's response to the teacher's request to draw something in nature.  She drew a dinosaur and added a squirrel nest to pacify the teacher.
Here's Jimmy Neutron, from the movie of the same name.

Of course, a dinosaur's on board his rocket ship, whether he likes it or not.
A new entrant into the race: the Magic School Bus, which converts and shrinks in order to explore various scientific phenomena.  VERY big.  And very educational.

Maddie likes to play Magic School Bus (or dinosaurs) at school, but it's causing a bit of friction with her friend Julia.  Julia, you see, only likes to play cat-related or princess-related games.
Anecdote
Max started heaving.  To protect the rug, I hurled the closest piece of paper under her gaping mouth.  I caught almost all of the vomit.
The paper turned out to be a torn-out picture of Thomas.  Maddie was outraged.  "Don't EVER do that again!  Now, how do we debarf this thing?"
