The following table is copied from "Letter Matrix: Orthographic Demons - Phoneme Grapheme Correspondences for different writing systems. Problematic sound signs." It is part of "New Follick, An Alfabet for English, by Steve Bett, 1997" at http://victorian.fortunecity.com/vangogh/555/Spell/letermatrix.htm. I have eliminated the columns for those orthographic schemes which use a mixture of upper and lower case letters for different sounds, as these strike me as totally impractical. I have added my Fönetık Ÿlfubet as the first column. Follick and SR1 P-A (Spelling Reform Stage 1 Phonetic Alphabet) seem to fit the needs the best of the other systems except for not distinguishing δ (q, dh) from θ (c, th) and hw (wh) from w. The distinction between the short u sound of up and cut and the schwa sound of acute is not one I hear, so I have made no allowance for it. The modification of the vowels by a following r is more meaningful in the "received pronunciation" of southern England than it is in American, perhaps because the r in the middle of a word is usually not pronounced. There is no difference between the er sound in air and fare versus error and care in American usage, though apparently there is in some British. The word party is a good example of this confusion, since the southern English pronunciation sounds like potty, not party, to an American. I treat the long a sound as a single sound, ë, though IPA and others insist it is a dipthong, and should be eı in my system. I come out with the same number of vowels, 12, by representing both the schwa and the short u by u. Palatalizing is represented by the letter j wherever it is found, as the y in yes (jes) or the i in union (jünjun), or in sh (sj), ch (tsj), zh [as in azure] (zj in uzjyr), j in jail (dzjël) or g in gin (dzjın), or long u as in perfume (perfjüm).
