IN
VANCOUVER, BC
July 16, 1999
Thunderbird
Stadium - UBC
Saw 10 of the
16 bands playing
that day on 2 stages...
6 of us went to
OZZFEST '99...
Pushmonkey
was on the 2nd stage when we arrived,
they sounded ok
but we wanted
to get to the area
of the main
stage...
Apartment 26
was
the first band up
and they were
pretty good
Just right to
start off the
day...
System of a
Down
did a good set
really started to
get the crowd
moving...
Godsmack
was quite enjoyable and well received
by the crowd...
Primus
was eagerly anticipated
was very, very
good...
Slayer’s
sound was off and I still can’t understand
even one word sung
by the lead
singer but I still
enjoyed the set
much better
than the last time
I saw them
(my personal
opinion is that
they could become MUCH
bigger with a
different singer,
heresy, I know but
hey!) ...
Deftones
(were tone deaf) really annoyed me
This was the only
group that
I REALLY
didn't like and I
felt that
the tour could have done
without them
easily... (would
definately have preferred
having Fear
Factory on the main
stage
in place of
them)...
Rob Zombie
could become one of my favorite performers
(even though he
seemed a bit
pissed off
and possibly cut
his set short)
Only saw a bit
of Slipknot
(from Iowa) when we
wandered around
the 2nd stage
craft booth area
they sounded
pretty good...
Ozzy
and Black Sabbath
did a set of their
oldest material
which was excellent
It took a few
songs to warm
up but as soon as they did
“Black Sabbath”
they really
caught fire. Their set
and the concert
ended with a
great (long, sustained)
burst of fireworks
over the
main stage.
Ozzy looked
better than
he has in many years.
Black Sabbath
played beautifully
and
Tony Iommi clearly
demonstrated
why he has
remained one of the
best
musicians in
metal...
I didn’t go
into the mosh pit
and I was the only one
from our group
that didn’t wind
up with bruises, sore
limbs, sunburn and
an aching
back
but the others had
fun doing
this.
Many of the
performers seemed
pissed off at the crowd,
that they wouldn’t
respond as
wildly as they
would have
liked.
I got onto the
computer after
the show
and went to the
OZZFEST website.
I posted my
impressions of the
show in their TALKBACK
section and
reminded the performers
that, 1st of all, there
was NO beer garden
allowed AND
many of the
performers DEMANDED
the response
instead of
working the
crowd.
The posting
probably won’t even
get read
by any of the
performers but
it can’t hurt to
have posted it
there.
Some people
felt that Sabbath
should have played longer.
That would
certainly have brought
a favorable
response from the
crowd, but...
Thunderbird
Stadium has an inflexible
10:00 event ending
rule.
Sabbath ended
their set at 9:30
and this would
have enabled them
to perform
an encore set, but...
The fact was that
the crowd
DIDN'T call for
an encore so
collectively
the crowd was at
fault here
too...
