pumpkin,
common name for the genus Cucurbita
of the GOURD family, including
the pumpkins and squashes.
Although the names are often
used interchangeably,
pumpkin, in the U.S., usually refers to
C. pepo and its varieties
(which also include the summer squashes).
The most popular of these is a vine
bearing orange fruits, or pumpkins,
used as pie filling and also carved into
jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween.
Squash usually refers to C. maxima,
which includes the winter squashes
(e.g., Hubbard), or C. moschata,
which includes the cushaws.
