The Optical Mouse:

My information about the optical mouse derives from website wisegeek.

(www.wisegeek.com).The optical mouse is a part of the computer that

can be bought separately. It uses a laser to detect a movement of the

pointer on a computer screen. This laser replaces the function of the

mechanical ball and inside rollers that a tradition mouse uses. Therefore,

the optical mouse is much lighter and does not need any monthly

maintenance such as cleaning the ball. Also, the work surface does not

have to be smooth; however, surfaces that may cause problems are glass,

mirrors, and some 3-d mouse pads.

How it works:

The main component of the optical mouse is the optical "eye", which scans

the surface under the mouse. The "eye" itself is a single Light Emitting Diode

(LED) which bounces the light off the desk surface. It also has a very tiny

camera that takes pictures of the surface. The original mouse by Microsoft

scanned the surface 1500 times a second; the optical mouse is even faster.

Parts:

Dual Sensors working together on the same surface are more accurate when it

comes to analyzing patterns and movement made by the computer user. These

sensors are positioned at an angle from each other to give two, completely

different views of the surface. Thus, they increase precision for very slow and

precise movements like those used in drawing programs or graphic design.

This technology allows the computer user work faster.
